Explorer '99 V6 4.0L
At first I Gould like to say Hello, I’m New on his forum, writing from Poland.
I got big problems with my ’99 EXPl.
I’ve spend a lot of money trying to fix the problems, cruising from a Ford service to another, buying plenty of part.. not so cheap here, for example Motorcraft plug about 20 $, wire set 130$ and so on..
Explorer here is not a cheap car to care about.. and the problem is that while there is only a few in this country, nobody got any experience on it.

My problem is:
Since a few months, in the morning, it stalls going up and down from 400 to 1500 and finally dies.
Now, I got a similar problem at hot not a so big amplitude but flying between 1000 to 400..
Sometimes everything is ok but others days every traffic light I have to start again.
I’ve change spark plug (motorcraft) wires, INTAKE MANIFOLD low and now, high set (Ford told that is must be this), Oxygen sensors checked,
Air filter new, checked air sensor, clean all air intake..
And nothing better..
I do not know what to do more.. as well as all Ford services I know..
Are u able to help me?
Perhaps you got an idea what can it be?
Sorry for my poor English, tks, Steph.

IAC is also new.. and nothing better.

Have you cleaned the MAF sensor or tried replacing it? That would be my next bet if you've replaced the 02 sensors and the IAC already.

Yes I've chean it myself with alcool 90'.
And nothing geter.
Check engine is lighting next day after cancelling it.
Code says that one day too rich mixture, the next time too poor..
Ford check my MAF and said that is working correctly.. but I'm not sure no more about their knolwedge rgdng Explorer.
(only one in my town)
Tks for yr reply.
Steph.

Have you had the manifold gaskets replaced from the recall? My Explorer did the same thing and it was due to the intake gaskets being the wrong size.

They sell the recall parts in a kit with the Timing chain tensioner if your is a V6 sohc engine.

I had the rich/lean codes appearing. Fitted the oom12 kit (upper and lower o rings with new tensioner). Cured it completely and no more rattle from the chain. With a reasonable set of tools its a DIY job.

have you checked the cam sensor? my ranger did the exact same thing.

Dear Howard
Tks for yr reply.
What do u mean by oom12 kit ? What is it?
Sorry my english is far to be good!
Steph.

HEy Justin, thks for yr reply.
Where is the cam sensor?
Tks,Steph.

Hej Lazzman,
I don't know exactly if they change the chain tensiometer..
The change this in the Ford service..
Did they do everything?
Got no idea..

Many thanks Howard!!!
It can be this.
I called my Ford dealer/service about this, they told me that there wasn't any letter regarding this.
I'm trying to find a copy and push an them.. I left there about 3K$ trying to fix this problem!
Tks,
Best regards,
Stephane

Stephane,

Welcome!! Where are you from? I've got family in Lagow, west of Keilce. Your English is much better than my Polish. :)

As for your problem, as was already mentioned, it sounds like the symptoms of a bad lower intake manifold gasket. "00M12" is the Technical Service Bulletin code for a specific service procedure to fix a known problem with the engine used in the Explorers. (Specifically the 4.0 Liter Single Overhead Cam (SOHC) motors)

The repair procedure is not too difficult as you already found out. The kit is not very expensive here, but may be a little difficult to get over there. If you have any issues, let us know, and I'm sure one of us can help get you the parts.

Hello Joe, I'm from Poznan, west of Poland.

Best regards,
Steph.

Tks Joe!

They hv to ask what about the limits now.. how to do..
I will get u inform,
Stephane

Hey there! I have sent you a Private message. Please, let me know if I can be of service. I can even call these guys and explain the problem. I had exactly the same problem with my now former 98 Sport.

***Proszę odpisz, postaram się pomóc***

Let's go through all this from the beginning... your dealer is just learning how to fix Explorers... they would not know about the recall because it had only been taken care of in the US. All others are on their own.

Sent you a reply... we'll fix it.

pozdrowienia z dalekiego US

Sorry guys for Polish language - looks like in Polish I might be able to explain things a little better even though Stephane is French but lives in Poland.
;)
