I found an exhaust leak, but I'm not going to be too worried. Just used some RTV sealant until I have Midas weld the pipe.
The guy at midas said 80-100 dollars for the muffler back . I've spent 141.00 on the muffler forward. So I figure it should be $300 at most to finish this up. I think this is the last mod of the year, as its getting too cold to work. :( Maybe some headlights and thats it. I noticed with the exhaust the throttle lag is not noticable anymore.

wow for 2.5'' pipe the midas guy said about 100$ for over the rear axle ? are you going to have it straight ou the back, or side exit ?

mandrel or press bent ?

i may have to look into midas lol

Not sure yet. I'm thinking of the side exit, but may go with straight out back for a "stock" look.

Yeah he said $80-100 dollars over the axle. I told him I had the muffler, and I did from the muffler forward. He the asked how large of a pipe, I said, 2.5". Then he gave me the probably $80-$100.

On the mandrel or press bent...I have no clue, he never said.

And caldwell, do you still have that under the axle set-up?

go the flo (magna that is ) awesome icecube

For less than $400 you can have a complete, stainless, mandrel bent catback from Magnaflow with a lifetime warranty. I still do not understand what is being gained by the method you are following.

I am not sure the potential gains from an under-axle setup are worth losing the ground clearance. Might make a bigger difference if you went supercharged or turbo...but I'm not sure even a mildly modified 4.6 puts out enough exhaust volume for the bend over the axle to matter much.

EDIT: it would be really interesting to get a dyno comparison between the two setups on the same vehicle

For One, I don't have the money for $350 or more to spend on a cat-back exhaust. Two, I'm not buying anything for my X via credit card, cash only. And Three, I get the best experience out of my own exhaust, and knowing that I did most of the work on it. Its all about learning how to do stuff yourself and learning from mistakes so next time, the final product turns out awesome! And I've got exactly what I want on this exhaust, the muffler I want, the reducer gone, and all. :D By the time I'd need to worry about using a warranty, I probably won't own this truck. And, just incase, I'm not trying to be mean by saying any of this.

I'm going with the over the axle set-up. I was just wondering if caldwell still had that set-up. I do some off-roading, so ground clearance is what I need. And agreed, It would be interesting to compare the two set-ups on the dyno...
I also went to midas today had them weld a few joints, pleased with the work :)

i would be very interested also in a comparison of my " under axle " vs and " over axle " 2.5'' set up...

im not a huge fan of the under axle set up i have now, but it works for me as i dont really go off roading that much " Winter usually ". once i get my stereo finished, im then going to be routing my exhaust back over the rear axle for the purpose of ground clearence. once i need tires, im going to be looking into some 255's, and i want that extra little 1/2 - 1 '' of extra clearence lol

People and stereos....:dunno: I just need to get some new speakers and that'll be it for my stereo. Why did you go with a under the axle set-up instead of an over the axle in the first place?

I'll try to get some videos posted up soon (within the week). Just been too rainy lately. I need dry pavement and good weather conditions, and for it not be the end of the month, highway patrol and sheriff have really been patrolling lately.

No worries, man. I am all for self-accomplishment and doing it yourself. Check out the few posts I have here; that should give an indication of what I have devoted my time to. From my perspective, you are trying to reinvent the wheel and will end up with the same cost for a system that is not stainless and probably not mandrel. HOWEVER, from a different perspective you get a 100% custom made exhaust, the satisfaction of knowing you did it, and the knowledge gained from doing it. That is certainly worthwhile; I just wanted to make sure you were aware of other options...it is all about perspective. Keep up the good work, and keep us posted!

I figure on my next exhaust I will buy a "kit". This is a lot of work and guessing on how to do it, what pieces to get, etc, etc. At least this way the cost is spread out a little more. I can't imagine myself dropping $350+ in a kit at one time, but $100 here, and $50 there seems to be a little "cheaper" for me. Even if it ends up being the same price.

hey icecube is your exhaust sorted? what tip are you looking at? ive seen some nice ones on ebay oval, rectangle 3" h 5"w. what do you reckon those'd sound like good or a wheezy poofs fart?

Not sure what tip I'm looking for. The tip is more for look than sound. If the exhaust sounds fairly good in the first place I'm sure it'd sound good with the tip. My maganflow with the resonator tip on it, makes a deeper tone than without the tip.

sweet, i didnt realize the resonated tip would deepen the note that maybe the shot from the get go for me. im starting to get square eyes and slight hearing loss from researching mufflers on youtube....sorry,what was that?

It wont make it a deeper tone, as much as a resonated tone. The magnaflow is deep tone, so it sounds better with the tip. You throw a flowmaster on with a resonating tip, and it makes it sound like s##t.

I suggest you go with a magnaflow exhaust or muffler. Sounds the best, IMO, and does the best for performance since it has a straight through design. I can look at one side of the muffler pipe and see the light on the other side :)

yeah im just not sure now i waana deep grumble at idle and 2k and dont like rasp at wot. ive never heard one or the other in person but dont want to bugger it up so only have the net to compare sounds. each muffler sounds different, even on the same car... aarggh too many variables

the video recorder,headers,pipe size,cats

can anyone give me a basic, real basic difference between magnaflow 11226 and flowmaster 40 delta? cheers

the flowmaster will drone a lot more, and will make tons of noise. The Magnaflow 11226 will make some good noise up to 2500rpm, then it will quiet out. Its not too raspy at WOT. It doesn't drone loudly at highway speeds.
Caldwell used to have a fm40 series on his old 03 XLS. Just wait for him to log on and he can give you his opinion on this.

thanks mate did you have this much hassle when you looked at mufflers?

No, I just went with what caldwell suggested. I was in a toss up between gibson and magnaflow. As you can tell I went with magnaflow. Straight throw design for optimum performance. I was in this more for performance and gas mileage.
