Proper engine bay washing?

I have a 2000 Eddie Bauer Explorer . Just curious about how to clean engine compartment properly without damaging anything .Going to use either simple green or purple power .I dont have any oil stain issues just road dirt .I know not to use high pressure rinse but are there things to seal or cover up

Cover up the fuse box and distributor.

Ditto, and covering the alternator can't hurt either, and make sure the engine is not hot when you clean and rinse it. Another handy tip I learned is using a leaf blower to dry the engine of residual water if you don't have an air compressor.
