My wife and I have been looking at the possibility of buying another vehicle.

I personally like the idea of a small truck. She wants an SUV.

My aunt has a 01 Sport-Trac 4x2 for sale, and it looks like a good compromise.

Things I want to know is...

What kind of gas mileage do these things realistically average?

And how much room is there up front with a rear facing child seat in the back?

Cause we plan on having children soon.

Any common problems?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome! My neighbor has one, and she tows about 3 little kids regularly. They all need car seats [in CA]. If the mrs wants an SUV, do it, and she'll be happy. If she doesn't want the Sport Trac, leave it. Who will be doing most of the driving [with the kids, strollers, toys, food, necessities, etc]?

Gas is about $4.00 a gallon; what kinda driving will you be doing [city, fwy, short drives]?

Well, she was the one who suggested the Sport-Trac, and I must agree. It would work out pretty well.

As of right now, her work is in her old home town. Its about 35 miles away, so her current car, the 06 Chevy Aveo works out great.

However, she is fixing to get a job closer, and we are fixing to start a family.

At the most we will probably drive per day, after she gets a closer job, will be 20 or 30 miles tops, and thats round-trip.

Some of the driving is city, but some is low-speed highway(60 or 65).

I want the bed in the back in case I have to haul a lawn mower, an engine, transmission, maybe an axle(I know it would hang out with the tailgate down a bit).
