I heard a story of someone putting colored bulbs in the puddle lamps and it melted the whole bottom of the mirror. I know that has nothing to do with the color but just be careful what kinda bulb you put in there.

You guys think a Amber 912 would melt it?

I don't know the SuperWhite bulb I used was the same watage and it melted the housing. I guess you could try it and just keep an eye on it for safety.

what # did you use? what brand? was it xenon bulb?

i dont think mine will melt to be honest its a 194 (168) bulb.

I used PIAAs 912 Xtreme Whites and they melted mine.

black magic, were they securely mounted in place? if they slip out the regular heat of the bulb might have melted the plastic

I have the same bulbs, but they didn't melt anything. You see, I rigged the engine cooling system to the mirror housing with some hydraulic hose, and attached some cooling fins on top. Just for good measure and to be safe, I drilled some 1/2 inch holes into the housing to let the heat out and provide passive air cooling at highway speeds.

Just kidding. :) Sorry I didn't help anything.
