Purchase advice

awesome thanks :) - like I said, what I read a long while ago obviously was the practices of fellow X owners and not what was stated in the manual :)

So getting back to the deal. anybody else want to comment? It's hard to determine a good price. Kelly's says it's worth around $2300. But then I check adds and I see 93's 94's going for $1000. One thing I can say that it is very clean in and out. Also how tough is it to fix the autohub that's bad. Sure is nice to stay inside and hit the button.

Like I said earlier - go for it. If the auto hub is busted and you want to get another auto hub, they're not that expensive to replace, even if its just one. If the truck is in as good of shape as you said plus having the work done that you listed - I'd go for it. You may not have the luxury of knowing what was done to the other Xs that you're finding in ads...how it was driven...etc etc

Price is always subjective, but IMO $1,500 is a decent price for a clean 1st gen Explorer. Many 1st gens for sale are beat and in poor shape :( so a clean X  is a good find...Check the maint sect for info on cleaning hubs.. Basically cleaning the autohubs involves removing the wheel and just sliding the autohub off...Take a peek inside the hub and if there is alot of grease then it is most likely being hydro-locked towards the disengaged position. You can pour some mineral spirits or paint thinner inside the hub and rotate the splines around.. Let it sit for 15+min and then turn the hub upside down over a can for 15+ minutes to drain off the mineral spirits.. Next poor some ATF transmission fluid inside the hub and rotate the splines around and let it sit for a few minutes... Turn the hub upside down over a can for several minutes and drain off any extra ATF and then reinstall..

Yes.....as was stated before, prices are subjective.

If you wanna shop....go ahead....look at the other vehicles.....I did look at other vehicles at other lots, priced cheaper and priced higher. Bottom line, you get to choose!

Note: That all that shopping is gonna take time.....and there MIGHT BE a better one down the road.....OR........it might be another JUNKER.

Knowledge is POWER, so take a look at these:

Figure it out........get an AVERAGE price, are you're getting a deal? Edmunds can also help you find a pvt deal or dealer near you, willing to sell using the search feature.

Aloha, Mark

for upstate new york you would be getting a good deal. 1st gens usually go for about 3k with well over 150k miles on em. If the hub is broken go buy warn manuals, and the conversion kit and install em.

As far as prices go, Edmunds tends to undervalue explorers compared to KBB, and NADA

Yeah I'm goin for it. I have one more thing that I noticed when I drove it just now. It's having a hard time coming out of 4x4. I had to back it up a few times to get it out. Is this also the bad hub?

yeah, they can stick when they get dirty/broken. try cleaning it as suggested above

Actually, the FORD manual mentions that to take it out of 4x4, back to 2WD......one should stop and drive the vehicle in the opposite direction (assume reverse) and drive it for 10 feet (3 meters) in a straight line......then stop and shift, to go back to forward motion in 2WD.

Aloha, Mark

hes saying that it takes several attempts at backing up to get it to unlock. they should unlock in 10 feet of straight reverse if theyre operating correctly.

Right, I tried 3 times and way more than 10 ft. The fir st thing I'll do is remove the hubs and see if is full of grease or dirt. I was just wondering if the trouble disengaging was due to another reason or problem.

Your talking about separate issues. Disengaging 4x4 high is accomplished by simply pressing the 4x4 High button, and waiting for the button & dash lights to go out. When the lights go out the Transfer case is in 2H and NO power is being sent to the front driver shaft.. If nothing happens when you press the button then let off the gas and try again... If your giving the engine gas it will make it harder for the shift motor to rotate the selector shaft out of 4x4. Also check out the Shift Motor Rebuild thread for lots of info and pics on making the shift motor work like new.

After you have disengaged 4x4 the auto hubs will unlock after reversing direction a few feet... There is nothing wrong with keeping your hubs locked as the big benefit in unlocking them is a slight fuel economy savings (1mpg?). If I came out of 4x4 and didn't plan on using 4x4 again I would unlock the hubs only if driving 20+miles... Auto hubs are "Automatic" you don't need to think about them.. They will automatically unlock once you reverse direction by backing out of a parking space ect..

But the thing is they don't. It takes a few times. After I push the button and the lights go out, and then back up more the 10ft (50ft) and then start to go forward, the hubs make a ratcheting sound. So I stop and do it sometimes a couple more cycles and it stops.

Your hubs obviously needs some attention.. It may be as simple as cleanning them, or more drastic as in replacing them...You won't know until you remove them and take a peek.

Right. I asked to find out if this was indicative of another problem besides the hub.

I say go for it and just replace auto hubs with manuals.

First I'll check to see if it's just grease or something. Anybody have a link to info on cleaning hubs?

I know and understand your concern around this truck, but if its in the shape you said, and had the repairs it did and driven by the person you said...its a good buy. :)
