i currently have 3.73 LS in the rear, and was thinking of re-gearing to 4.10 and was wondering if my limited slip would still work with the new gears. or do i have to get limited slip set up for 4.10 gears? thanks, todd.

They should still work Todd. You might have to order them for a LS but I don't think so. I do know that the ring gear just bolts to the LS assembly so there shouldn't be a problem.

i want 4:10s!...but 3:73s are fine for my 31s

with 33s what are you at on the highway for RPMs?(at say 65MPH)

I was lucky enough that mine came with them:)

You have to do nothing to the LS (or get another one) just to swap r&p ratios. There are no carrier breaks in the 8.8, and the carrier (or carrier type) won't be affected in any way by changing ratios.

Yup - your Ring Gear will bolt right on to the carrier and you'll have no problem. I swapped my factory open carrier to a ford racing LSD - no problems at all except with the ring gear being wider than the other one so I had to grind down one tooth so the pin would slide through.

thanks for the help! todd.

i have 31's on my 96. what gears do i have and do i need to change them b/c of the 31's? i know the 31's take away from my gas milage, but if i had to re-gear to get a little better milage it would be worth it. thanks.

if you have 3:73s its really not worht it IMO. i noticed no differance in power with my 31s. i just want the extra pep of the 4:10s.

your MPG would prolly go down if you got 4:10s ;)

I agree with limited. If you are going to swap think 4.56, or just live with the 3.73. And if you wheel it at all you want the 4.56. Also if you have a stock LSD on a 96 the clutch pad are worn out and will need to be replaced when you regear, if you really want a LSD performance.

am i wasting my time thinking about 4.10 gears? i'm running 33's right now, the largest i'd ever run would be 35's, and this is a daily driver. will 4.10's make my highways mileage better or worse? i'm thinking better, but i'm an idiot. todd.

check this out. i am in the middle of re-gearing myself (i got the differential in peices out in the garage) and im going ahead and using 4.56 gears + TrueTrac LSD. I am only running 32"s.

Overkill maybe, but i have plenty of room to grow in tire size. And from 3.27 stock i think ill finally be able to take my 32s in the mud.

But if you are running OD on the highway then your gas milage is gonna get worse. But if you are not running OD all the time your gas milage might get better. It all depends on how you drive is how your gonna be affected.

in my case ill be getting better mpg since i wont have to run 2500-3000rpm to keep myself above 45mph

i don't understand how overdrive would make it worse? isn't overdrive essentially your last gear? and when you turn it off, it downshifts? so if it's on, wouldn't my RPM's be lower on the highway, using less gas?

toddioius i think hes trying to say when your explorer kicks into over drive gear it wont have enough power to keep a steady speed at low rpms it would have to kick up the rpms to keep the vehicle running at a constant speed guys correct me if im wrong

oh ok, i understand. so basically, it depends on how fast i drive on the highway. because i may not be using overdrive until higher speeds now. correct?

Yes, and can use overdrive at lower speeds than before... lower speed to me is 55 insted of 65... since i rarly do 65 down the surface streets... making me have to use 4th, (manual tranny) keeping my RPMs up like 2500+

but again it might hurt your gas. In actuality its going to do both.

On highways your gas is gonna get hurt

On surface roads, stop and go traffic, your gas is gonna get better

but again its all on the way you drive. If you keep your truck below 2200 rpm at all times then you will probably end up getting 25mpg consistantly no matter what variable of driving. you dont need a higher or lower gear for that...
