I had the A4LD in my 92 4 door 4x4 rebuilt at 88,000+ miles. The Tec that did the rebuild told me that he puts 1 to 2 pints of motor oil in with the trans fluid. He said, he does this cause trans fluid has poor lubricating qualities. That rebuild went 150,000+ miles. The question is. Was that a good idea?

I've never heard of this being done before. I hope that it was a very thin grade since oil could coagulate with temperature change, and cause parts to stick if it catches clumps of band material, metal filings or clutch plate material. Oil is a very good lubricant, but it catches dirt. Transmission fluid has detergents that prevent parts from accumulating dirt. The transmission fluid lubricates, and cleans at the same time. Regular oil that is good quality has detergents in it, but the detergents in transmission fluid are more concentrated. Put a quart of transmission fluid into your engine about a half an hour before you do an oil change, and drive around. You will be amazed at how much dirt comes out of your engine.

Thanks for the reply, I was just wondering, and thinking that may be he was BSing me a little. But like I said the trans did go 150,000+ miles--- I killed it, towed a j**p up to the Rubicon.

How often did you replace the fluid over the 150k miles that it lasted?
