I overheated my 93 EX. 4.0, replaced head gaskets, had them checked for cracks and resurfaced to true.Shop said it didn't seem to get hot enough to do any damage and the valves were good also.Back together and running fine for a few hundred miles than lost a cylinder, traced it to a broken valve spring, bought all new springs thinking I could do them with the heads on-prolly be able to get some done that way but ain't no way I gonna get them all. The broken 1 is replaced and unless I do them all I will never trust the other 11. Question I have is when I pull the heads can I reuse the headbolts considering the few miles on the heads, and can I get head gaskets without getting the $100+ set? thanks for the help. Bob.

no you can not reuse anything.all the springs can be changed without removing the head.just did this not to long ago.the ac/heater box needs to be removed though, piece of cake like 4 screws

ps you know you have to fill the cylinder with air and make sure the piston goes down all the way

I used the rope trick instead of air,and are you refering to an overhead valve spring compressor?

huh i didnt say anything about a spring compressor?

and i wouldnt trust the rope trick at all

No you didn't, guess I was just assuming for I don't know of another way to get the springs off, getting them on with the compressor is not the problem,if you wouldn't mind sharing your know how on removing them I would appreciate it.

I dont understand your question? Use a spring compressor to put them on and off.why do you say you cant do them all?

things are just getting turned around so ill try and reword this.

if you take the heads off, you HAVE TO get new gaskets and head bolts. and use a valve spring compressor to remove and replace the springs.

if you leave the heads on, blow a constant psi of compressed air into the spark plug hole until the piston goes all the way down, you will hear it, then hold it there and carefully use the valve spring tool to remove one spring at a time to replace. then move to the next spark plug hole and start over.
for cylinder #3(at the firewall on passenger side) you have to remove the giant ac/heater box to get the valve spring tool on the two springs. 3 bolts on the outside and one bolt on the inside by the kick panel, all 11mm deep socket. draining your freon is a different story tho, unless theres enough slack

How do you know how to get them on with the spring compressor but not off?it works the same way,you compress them to get them on and you compress them to get them off.what am i missing??? And another member just told you step by step on how to do it:eek:

:wtf: valve springs and dancing go hand in hand
anyway, make sure you get a good valve spring compressor. ive used a cheap chinese one and it broke in half.
