I am about to add two 12" JL Audio W0's to my 93 XLT 4 door. Does anyone know where I should aim the subs, towards the rear hatch or straight to the ceiling?

Aim them at the rear hatch. I had the same subs in my 96 until they got stolen. Hope you fun with them.

I disagree with punkchild. I think it is better to aim the subs up so the ground of the truck absorbes the reverberations. You can always try it and see which one you like best.

my oppinion is that it really doesn't matter much if you aim it up or down. the seats can absorb these "reverberations" pretty well. the reverberations are going to be just as big on the on the bottom of the box as the back because sealed boxes rely on pressure and the pressure is basically the same on similarly shaped sides. i agree with green that its just a matter of personal preference

The best thing would be to face it to the back. you can turn the subs up a lot more without hearing the woofer actually moving or making the slap noise at high volume. a rear faced sub box whether sealed, vented, or bandpass has the best output because it bounces around more using the car as a sub box. The sound will carry for blocks if you leave the rear window closed and roll down the front two is you are going for public nuisance ticket. A singe twelve facing the rear of the car would be louder and carry farther than 2 10s facing up or forward. and 2 10 inch w0s would sound badass as long as you have the right size box in either sealed or bandpass, and run lots of juice to them, you will turn heads from hella far away.
go to any professional shop and they will tell you to face it to the back to increase the load. basicaly, POINT BACKWARDS, MORE BUMP, better low end response. you will notice a great difference inside and outside the car. if you get any RATTLE coming from the box stuff it with fiberfill or put insulation on all the walls of the box, you will get a cleaner sound and it will sound like a bigger box cuz it slows the bass waves.

Thanks guys. The box I am currently designing for the truck is going to be made of 3/4 inch mdf and I will probably use either Pioneer subs or JL W0's. I can't quite decide. (Oh, their gonna be 2 12"s)
Thanks again for the input, I will post pics when I'm done.

If you're making your own box, if cargo space isn't that important to you, might as well make it so it fits underneath the cargo cover. Punkchild isn't the only one on this board who's had JLs or any other sub stolen for that matter. No use wondering too much which way to aim the subs if they're stolen.

i would definately go with the w0s. i am not particularly fond of pioneer subwoofers. Think this.... does jl make anything other than subs? (for now... i know, there bringing out a line of amps)
my freind has w0s in his car... their awsome.

here's a handy suggestion...i currently compete for sound q and have had woofers aimed in both directions. first i had 2 12's facing back which was pretty nice. then i upgraded to 4 10's ported facing upward. it was loud but the quality was better when i built them a new box facing back. the more distace that low frequencies travel the better they sound. to take care of the rear hatch rattle stick some dynomat in everyplace possibe and then add a little insulation (such as home insulation). if you still have some rattle move the two locking pins that hold the door shut in a tad for a tight fit. after i did that the only hting that rattled was the windshield wiper. another thing is you might want to take a look at the JL w3's. they were spcifically made to be put in cars with large air space. port it correctly and you'll be very proud.

Just a suggestion on what to get. I had 2 JL W-0's in a ported MTX box. The box wasn't square the top was only 5-6 inches wide compared to the bottom that was more than a foot. The subs were powered by a 300Watt Majestic amp. They sounded damn good.
