I am pulling the trans on my 91 as i type this. FINALY. Anyway question is this. In my ford shop book it mentions reaching through the starter hole to undo the torque converter bolts. Having pulled a couple other trannies (different vehicles) I found that this is not always required. Wont the input shaft just slide out of the converter? Basicaly leaving the converter on the flywheel? This would naturaly be easier so you can avoid trying to work in that tiny spot and trying to aply a massive amount of torque to remove them.

on the 4.0L the hole created giving you access to the converter bolts is not that small.

You need to remove the starter, then turn the engine over with the big crankshaft pulley bolt on the front of the engine

It helps if you remove the spark plugs first and of course the battery disconnected.

When I did my truck I located the first bolt, then drew a simple diagram on the balancer pulley (4 dots) This allowed me to estimate how far to turn the crankshaft to get at the net bolt.

Takes a few minutes, hour or so sometimes to get all 4 (especially tightening them with hand tools and no helper) but its the easiest way I know of to seperate the trans......

I would highly recommend that you remove the bolts instead of leaving the torque converter on the flywheel. First, you may not have enough room to slide the tranny back far enough to disengage the torque converter. Second, if you don't pull it off straight, you run the risk of damaging either the input shaft on the tranny or the torque converter itself. Take the extra time and do it right.

Where in Philly are ya?? I grew up down there.

Thanks on the diagram idea. I will do that. I am waiting on a tranny jack to arive then I will pull it. EVERYTHING else is ready to go. That transfer case is heavier than expected.
I am actualy in west chester pa just outside of philly. philly is just better known.

A bunch of the bolts so far have been insanely tight. Any idea on how bad the flywheel to converter bolts are?
PS starter is already out.

I know that one. I say I'm from Philly too, but I actually grew up just outside of Malvern. Don't tell me you went to WC Henderson! GVHS here!!!:p

The T/C bolts are usually pretty tight but you should be able to break them loose with a little bit of elbow grease. Use a 14mm deep socket and a 3/8" ratchet. You should be able to break them loose with no trouble.

HAHA no i grew up in paoli. I am a stoga kid. YUCK. hated that place. Ahh yes Great Valley. I know it well.

NH25, Thanks glad to hear it from someone with experience. I was hoping someone had the exact trick.

The TG nuts are right next to the starter ring

My socket kept slipping. Thought I had the wrong size till it became evident that the socket wall was too thick. Socket would hit the starter gear ring and not slide down over the nut. Had to go through my entire collection till I found one thin enough.

So I need a 14mm thin wall deep socket? gotta take a tool run i guess.
