Recently we bought a 2003 Expedition XLT 4x4 to pull a new boat we also just picked up . . . . . sounds complicated (and it is).

The Expedition is a great truck but my wife and son find it too big for them . . . . hence another vehicle search.

We are looking (thinking) at getting an Explorer with a V-8 to pull at 3800 lb boat. I assume the V-6 would be underpowered for the task.

The questions we have are:

1) Was there a change in design on the Explorer's like the Expeditions did in 2003 with the usable 3rd row seats? What years should we look for if we opt to go that route?

2) Thoughts on the V-6 vs. the V-8 for towing the boat . . we are only 5 miles or so from the lake?

3) Any known problems with the Explorer's that we should be on the lookout for?

Thanks in advance for any assistance . . . .

Welcome to Explorer Forum! Good luck on your Explorer search!

Welcome.

Actually, you could pull 3800 pounds with a V-6 with the towing package; since you're not going too far, you don't have to worry about the tranny giving out or anything.

If you're going for a 3rd-generation Explorer (2002-2005), make sure that you listen for any kind of rear end noise (whining, howling), if it has the towing package with limited slip rear diff. Otherwise, if you want a vehicle with 4x4, make sure that you can engage the 4x4 -- the 4x4CM tends to fail on early 3rd gens (2002 and 2003, I believe).

Welcome to this forum! The 4R70W transmission is beefier than the 5R55W, so get a V8 with the 4R70W package. If you are not concerned about towing, but looking to get better gas mileage, then get the V6 SOHC with the 5R55W.

I wouldn't tow with an Explorer with any less than the V-8. If you're looking for a 3rd generation Explorer I would look for 2003 and up. Problems to look for is leaky rear differentials and broken rear coil springs. Personally I would stick to the Expedition. The added weight of it is also an advantage towing also. Make the wife and son get used to it. ;) It'll be good for them. A Expedition is not all that big of a vehicle once you get used to it.
