Anyone know what the electrical box located under the interior trim near the rear washer fluid container is for? I know the factory audio amp is on the passenger side, this is on the driver side.

I believe that's the GEM computer for the electronic shift transfer case, but someone may want to confirm that for me.

ok so i am running this in a demolition derby. If i remove the GEM controller will the transfer case stay in 2 hi with no problems? we try to remove as much as possible. and front driveshaft will need to be removed anyway per the rules. Doesnt go into 4wd anyways,

It will be good without the computer. If needed, you can still manually switch it around by getting underneath and removing the shift motor and turning the shaft with vise grips or similar.

On another note; sad to hear about an Explorer going to a demo derby :(

Just make sure to post some pics, I'm curious how much carnage a 1st gen will cause! :)

Definitely!! Video even better! Best derby I ever saw was mini trucks. 7 rangers, 2 square body s10, a Jeep Cherokee and a Durango that didn't make it to the field. The fords wound up bashing each other into oblivion for nearly 40 mins. One rolled over was righted, and finished 3rd. One of the Chevy's lasted to 4th. It was exciting. It might be hard to watch an ex get mashed though..

On the plus side, with all that tonka-tough steel, you should win no problem! :p

Mound, Minnesota. Home of Tonka trucks! I remember this from being a little tyke and sending in a Tonka truck that had broken for repair. They fixed it and sent it back no charge! Why doesn't Ford do that!?

I couldn't watch it. I'm a big softie when it comes to stuff like that.

Its hard to not think about the day each one of those cars was a very proud new purchase.. I think about that a lot at antique car shows too. My Model T was someone's new car at one point, it even was cutting edge technology at one time!

I remember after I bought my new 1991 XLT (still own and drive it!). It was a real head-turner then and was the must-have truck.
That's why I think the Explorer is a landmark car and will be collectible some day. The design hit the sweet spot for the SUV and the result became a huge market for all brands.
Now, I get road raged more than if I drive my wife's car. People think I am some broke hillbilly who stupidly drives the speed limit and can't afford a new car.
My '91 has NEVER broke down and NEVER failed to drive the mission. I have had the clear title since 1993. I make money every time I turn the ignition key!

I agree, most vehicles that were popular new, become popular again. I remember being so envious of my friend after his dad bought a white 92 Explorer Eddie, and my dad had bought the Areostar just a few months before. I loved that van and I have one today.. but the explorer was just so cool.. then Jurassic park came out..!

Congrats on being the original owner and still having it.

Bought a '92 XLT brand new and still driving it, bought a '94 Limited about 6 years ago for $800 and have put about another $700 into it - and still driving it (it's my favorite by far). They can keep their new cars that have to go to the dealer to have the oil changed or the 'change oil' light won't go out...
