'97 EB
Just bought a '02 EB to replace my '97 EB. Had a few questions.

1. The manual states to use 87 octane. Will I do more harm than good using premium (93 octane) like I used for the 5 years I owned the '97?

2. How do I operate the A/C from the rear seats (the one mounted in the ceiling) While the control for the back seems to work from the front, I cant seem to control the back with the controls in the back ceiling.

3. Are there any other cool features of this car that I may not be aware of?

4. I have a slight rattle in the driver's door... any suggestions?

Thanks guys

I have a 2002 EB also, here are my thoughts on your questions:

1. The manual states to use 87 octane. Will I do more harm than good using premium (93 octane) like I used for the 5 years I owned the '97?
I am not an engine person, but usually the computer is coded for a particular type of fuel. I bet the computer can adjust to the richness of 93, but I don't think it will result in any performance gains and just cost you a lot. I suppose if yopu re-chipped, then you might see something. I would like a better shift curve, my EB is a dog until it breaks 20 mph.

2. How do I operate the A/C from the rear seats (the one mounted in the ceiling) While the control for the back seems to work from the front, I cant seem to control the back with the controls in the back ceiling.
Up front on the roof mounted controls (yeah the ones that have no angle making them hard to see from driver's seat), there is a setting on the fan speed switch for "rear control". This allows the rear seats to use that 2nd panel on the ceiling in the 2nd row. Its not like some older controls where the front selects a "maximum" and the rear controls up to that point, its an either or setup. I find it weird, the ceiling controls are fully independent from the front (with the exception if the AC is on in front, cooling in back will get AC too) but Ford left the lower controls on the center console which are supplemental ducts from the front system... So passengers can select "Warm" from ceiling control, but still get "Cold" from the floor ducts if that's what the driver has selected.

3. Are there any other cool features of this car that I may not be aware of?
Supposedly there is a hidden menu on the 6 disc CD player, I haven't found it yet. What is cool for me is that when you disable passenger window control, their window controls don't light up at night. Also when you shut off the car at night, and before you open the doors, all your window/door controls stay lit, but after you open the door, only the door lock controls stay lit... a lot of relays for a very simple feature.

On the bad side, there is very little leather in the vehicle, look at the leather, if the little holes are not really through the material, its vinyl... that includes 3rd row seat, door trim.

4. I have a slight rattle in the driver's door... any suggestions? Check for something in the pocket... that poket is deep and narrow and i had some screws in it when i first got it... if that's not it take it in.

Now I have a question... I hear the 2003 EB has a color matched leather padded center console arm rest... is the part the same screw/size as the 2002 arm rest, can I purchase a replacement one?

Oh another cool thing... If you hold down the "Load" button, for a few sceonds, on the CD player, you can load all 6 discs at once without having to hit "Load" than the disc number. Same goes for "Eject", hold it down a couple seconds, and it will Eject all the discs.

to answer your question regarding cool features.

i like the fact that the low beam lights stay on with the high beams.
these are VERY good lights also.

also after you turn the ignition off, all the power accessories work for 10 minutes or until a door is opened.

mi2002eb- how did you find out about the load and unload "feature" on the 6 disc?

I heard about the load/eject features from a friend who spends a lot of time over at myfordfocus.com. A great site for Focus owners.

what would be on the hidden menu for the 6 disc changer, if there is one?

Okay, just spent some quality time out in the garage with my Explorer... I found out the hidden menu is activated by holding down the "Menu" button... but before you run out and try it, you should know it doesn't work. Apprarently there are two versions of the 6 disc CD player... if you have the one that has a little removable "pen thing" security device, then you have that menu... it's on the Mustangs, focuses, and rangers I was told, us Explorers get a slightly different radio. In that hidden menu you can access "Compression" and "Speed Control Volume"... I found Compression on our radio by playing a disc and cycling through the "menu"... and apparently we don't had speed sensitive volume.

But in another enlightenment... I found a button on my Explorer that I never knew exisited. From day one, my dealer and other dealers I visited told me the only way to release the glass only part of the lift gate was through the Key FOB... Always thought that was weird but accepted it. Well tonight I just found out there is a soft molded electronic button right next to the license plate light that releases the lift glass if the doors are unlocked. I guess this is why I never trusted dealers knowledge on their products... not a big thing, so it was a cool find tonight.

So another thing, now that I found 2002 owners... why are the front couple holders both slightly different sizes? and why did Ford design them so small... I thought after the 80s car people learned to provide real cup holders... the cup holders can't hold a 20 once bottle... once again my dealer said the front door pocket is designed to hold a 20 oz bottle, but that's not all that convienant when driving.

From what I can tell, the 20oz. cupholders they claim up front are part of the molded door pocket. Notice how they are narrow towards the rear then suddenly buldge at the front? A 20oz. soda bottle fits there. Not exactly convienent but it works. However, my honkin' coffee mug though has to ride somewhere else!

Actually, we have an '02 Limited and it has Speed Control Volume on it.

Speed Control Volume

I know this is an old thread, but I just found out where the Speed Control Volume adjust is on my 2002 EB with the 6 disc radio.

At anytime the radio is on, Hold down the volume knob for 5 seconds, release when it says "speed vol: 0". Zero means its off. It can be adjusted anywhere from 0-7. I notice it kicks in around 35 mph. I have mine set at 5 and that seems to be pretty good for me.

A fun test, brake hard... your stereo mutes pratically.

This is not in the Owner's manual anywhere!!! I asked the dealer about it when I got my new radio. Yep at 6500 miles, my first head unit crapped out (CD player stopped working).

Excellent! I will try it tonight! It's fun to find out you got more than you thought, rather than the other way around :)

"Hidden Features"

These features are in the manual.

Check the owners manual on page 77, in the section called "Speed Sensitive Volume".

"Auto Load" (to load all CDs at once) is on page 82, under "Auto Load".

The "Hidden Button" on the rear liftgate is detailed on page 114 under the topic "Rear Liftgate" with an arrow pointing to the button.

Maybe these are actually "undocumented" features. My manual is the Sixth Printing - June 2002.

:)
