I have a 96 Explorer , 5.0 , awd, rebuilt the engine at replaced the transfer case at 210k , rebuilt the engine at 212k and rebuilt the tranny at 230k, sitting at 255k now, just some history!

Now to the issues! I was on a long cruise not so long ago, climbing about a 4% grade and the oil pressure started jumping, i dropped rpm's thinking oh no it's gonna blow up!
As i got back around 2500 rpm's oil pressure came back, never heard a lifter rattle and or noise.

Although after that i couldn't get about 2500 rpm as the oil pressure gause would drop off to nothing! Again , i heard nothing , no sign of not getting oil. I tested out the gauge, ( grounded it out ) it only goes to about half way , i was told it should max out once grounded.

Although with time now i have noticed that the lifters are rattling , oil pressure shows nothing at all anymore , It's a second car so not a daily driver Anymore!

I was told by a mechanic friend that it's possible for the oil filter adapter to possibly cause a loss of pressure aswell as leak coolant into the oil, I have found minumal amounts of coolant in the oil at this point, but not enough to indicate an actual leak (i.e cracked head or bad gasket) Really not looking forward to tearing it down again!

Any thoughts you might have , Please feel free to post them!

Thanks

you may want to look at cam bearings. this is some times the loss of oil presure.
