quick question regarding swiss cheese air intake

I have seen the many threads on this forum regarding drilling holes in the stock air intake box to allow more air through. I was simply wondering if it would be better to drill a few large holes, or many smaller ones. I am looking to create the best air flow possible without letting lots of dirt and grime into the stock intake box. Thanks

I cut an entire corner off my first airbox, covered it up with an old speaker grill to keep big debris out. then later I cut a 4" hole in the radiator support behind the grill and fed the airbox with a 4" tube, this setup works well! Keep syou from sucking up only hot underhood air........

Oh and make sure you cut the holes on the proper side of the filter hahahaha not kidding I have seen it all.....

I plan to cut the front off of the bottom of my airbox and run a K&N panel filter. I'm looking to make my airbox similar to the Volant intake with a large shielded opening in the front.
For now I just removed my silencer and took a 2.5" holesaw and bored another large oval hole on the fender side of my airbox to match. Works pretty well. you only need enough "hole" to equal the diameter of your intake tube. You'll never draw more air than it's diameter.

I just thought of something. Glue some kind of screen(like from a screendoor) overthe holes. It's so simple it's dumb.

The silencer is the little horn looking tube on the front of your airbox. It funnels down your intake to the size of a quarter. Push on it from the front and it will pop right out and triple the size of your air intake to your airbox. It is supposed to quiet the intake noise, but I didn't notice any difference in noise from removing mine. Removing the silencer is a typical freebie mod for T-Birds and Mustangs.

The Explorer used many different airbox types and locations over the years, in some of the intake tubes (from MAS to TB) they had whats called an "air silencer" built in or muffler, right where the tube goes over the fan, that sucker was restrictive.
The air intake feeding the airbox is also VERY restrictive on some models, the later models with the round airbox are better, but still you are looking at sucking up all your air through a hole the size of a half dollar. Mine is 4" in diameter now I feed cold air from just next tot eh passenger headlight directly to my open air filter, with a heat shiled to keep the underhood air out.
Next is a scoop for the hood.
When done properly no water will reach the filter, well not enough to make it through...

I just took the whole bottom off, and wrapped some tape around the air filter and top part of the air box to hold it in... This was for no real reason though, but it turned out wicked.
