I have a chance to buy a Sport 4x4, for very cheap, very cheap. Only catch is that it needs a clutch. Is there an easy way to do this, like just sliding the transmission back enough, instead of taking it out completely? Is this a job that can be done in a driveway reasonably easily?

T case, exhaust and trans must all come out.

Easy? no
Any harder then any other 4x4? no

I can do it myself in 4-6 hours, but I have done it a few times.
The search button is your friend.

You will want to replace the clutch assembly, have the flywheel turned, replace the pilot bearing, and replace the internal slave cyl/TO bearing while it is apart.

I have all sorts of time, but also only have a driveway. Could I do this in my driveway as a weekend project? I replaced the flexplate on my truck myself at school, so I have the basics on Explorers. I did the clutch on a racecar so I know how it works also. I'm mainly concerned if I could do this in my driveway on my back. I also dont really have a way to get the truck high in the air, like I've seen on this site before.

yes a weekend is enough time as long as you are prepared with tools and parts.

I dont need any special tools do I? Other than the clutch alignment tool?

well maybe. I mean it depends on what is "special" to you. Aside from metric and standard sockets, drivers and wrenches, not really. a couple of really really long extensions help get some of the bellhousing bolts from behind/around the trans.

its pretty straight forward, especially if you follow the proceedure laid out in the shop manuals.....and dont skip dropping the exhaust, it is so much easier to jsut get it out of the way.

PB blaster the exhaust bolts now :)

You may need a slam man to help you relieve stress when those bolts wont come loose. A real torch will really help on the manifold bolts. I think parts are about $300 clutch and slave cylinder. The alienment tool and hose wrench should come with the c;utch kit.

So its basically the same operation as an automatic. Driveshafts, crossmember, bell housing, pull it off, with the addition of the slave cylinder.

We just did this in our driveway (no garage) using jack stands floor jacks. Not ideal especially if the weather sucks, but definatly something that can be done :-)

I did my Ranger's clutch in my driveway, on my back, with a creeper, jack, and jackstands.

I did my sport's auto trans the same way, but I used an 18" piece of 6x6 wood under each tire to give me some clearance.

A long while back my dad and I did my clutch (4 door 4x2). I never did one before or anything this extensive, but it took us a long weekend to do it. I tried messing with the manifold bolts, but we took the easy way and sawzall-ed the crossover pipe. When we finished we put a metal Fernco over it and had an exhaust shop weld it back together for like $30.

I got my pressure plate, clutch plate, and slave cylinder from Advance Auto Parts and it did run about $300. And it came with the bleeder tool and the alignment tool. A few have said that these things have weak slave cylinders which is why I replaced mine (wasn't having any trouble, but oh well).

I can say that my clutch pedal was a lot easier to press with the new slave cylinder and bleeding the system.

Note: we replaced my clutch etc because we swapped out the tranny (OD was blown). Clutch wasn't in bad shape either, but I already had the parts bought and figured that we didn't want to pull it out again anytime soon :D. My dad examined the flywheel and determined that it wasn't in bad shape at all and we left it the way it was.

Whats the clutch kit worth, and do I need to buy anything else? The kit should include everything...?

I can't seem to find any prices anywhere, canadaian or american.

Look for the LUK Gold kit.

a transmission jack will make this project much quicker

it isnt that hard at all. The exhaust is a PAIN, and the clutch master clinder quick disconnect fitting is also a snag. But you shouldnt have much trouble. Look for a post from ROBB about replacing the clutch, it has everything you will need to know.

Yeah, I used Robbs thread as a guide when I did mine.

And I used the LUK Gold kit, bought online thru Dial-a-Clutch. Excellent company!

Thank you all for your help. Gonna get the truck if I can.
