Have a power steeering leak in the steering rack and im trying to figure out if it would be easier to just get a new 1 or replace the seals a friend asked if the seals are on the inside of it or outside of the steering rack

Get a replacement.

Changing the rack is enough of a pain in the ass (on a 5.0 anyway…not sure what you’ve got) that I would just swap in a replacement unit. Higher chances of success, plus god only knows what you need to rebuild a rack properly.

My engine is the 4.0 SOHC everyone says to stay away from 🤣

Use one of these to remove the rack works great
It's called a transverse engine Support bar

You only need to lift the w fine a little if it’s the 5.0
With your sohc engine you can change the steering rack without touching the engine

Change the rack, use a good reman from Napa or carquest
Fixing a seal in the rack is like pointless even if you manage to change the seal chances are some internal issue will cause it to leak again

i normally go with parts from bumper to bumper unless im up visiting my uncle who works for napa cause i find napa charges an arm and a leg for stuff, i do avoid canadian tire for parts though

I had to lift my engine about a inch For the rack bushings it was a pain
Then I had to do the oil pan
The lift makes it way easier imo
Btw I don't have a car lift

After three reman unit (2 to 3 years) ,I purchased a new unit. Its expensive, hopefully it will last 20 years.

Ya price the parts store i called told me about 300 and i plan on changing bothe the outter tie rods at the same time since i need to do 1 of them anyways

Just sayin'

To ensure long P/S Rack & P/S Pump life, run a GENUINE 3/8" Magnefine (brand) Filter on the return line from the Factory Cooler back to the P/S Pump.

Available on Amazon = $22 for the filter & $5 Shipping

Carry on -

I’ve been rather bored, and looking to get into a project. Maybe I’ll build one of these.

I just changed the rack in my 95 - used a new Edelman unit instead of reman. Works a charm. Best this truck has ever handled.
