greetings all,

i own a 2000 xplorer/xls (92k miles)

anyhow, the rack & pinion has started leaking (very small amount)

the local auto-check wants to charge me $750 to replace it.

does this sound reasonable?

on a related note, how much longer should i continue driving - with this leak?

at this point, i can't tell that there's anything wrong with the rack & pinion or anything related.

thanks, c

Try some power steering stop leak first.

As far as price you can buy a referbished Rack from Advance for $130 but it will take most of a day to swap if you have never done one before.

Does that quote include an alignment? An alignment will cost you around $70.

If the leak doesn't bother you then you will be fine just don't let it run dry.

The alignment is included in the quote.

Anyhow, most things bother me - I will try this first: http://www.lucasoil.com/products/display_products.sd?iid=28&catid=2&loc=show

(as per the recommendation of another member)

If the leak doesn't disappear, I will likely have it replaced. Unfortunately, I can't do it myself (no tools, no garage - at this point).

Thanks for Replying
