Radar detectors

Blackmagic, of course. I know I'm always watching for stuff, I've had a few kids run in front of me. Not a big deal, had no trouble stopping. I try and keep the speed lower around areas where I see kids. On your 8500 do you have any bands turned off? I have no idea if K or X is used here by the radars, but they sure are by doors!

I am glad to hear that.

As for turning off any bands. No I have all on, I don't want to risk it. Also be sure to read your manual and turn on the Expert mode. It displays the actual Frquency of the radar. That way you can get used to the freq of the doors you drive by everyday. If there is a different freq you know it is not the door and more than likly an Officer.

I encountered the ball in the street and stopped for the kid following it. That saying is too true.

I don't know what is the best Radar Detector but I do know that Cobra sucks. I bought one for my trip from NY to Florida and it was useless. It beeps when the trooper is about 20 feet away. Totally useless!

I have a cobra. I paid 130 bucks for it works great. Sure you have your share of false alarms, but it picks up all the K and Ka bands thats cops use. It works great on the highway and has a city and highway mode. On I-95 cops use K band. It picks em up to about a 1/2 miles away, which gives plenty of time to slow down.

Because I have a minimum wage job, I couldn't justify spending a week of work on a radar detector, so I bought a Whistler, and I have been very pleased with the results. I have picked up every speed trap that I have encountered, and am very thankful for it!!:D Two bad points, if it is empty, the cop will not run radar untill you get close enough where it is too late, no radar detector will be able to pick this up. The second thing is since I have the radar, it automatically voulenteers me to lead a group of cars, ;) !

I've had my BEL Vector LR Remote for a few years now and I love it. Very sensetive, and completely invisible when I need it to be. Here is the main control unit in the ash tray.

Here is the rear laser detector. It's the little black box in the rear window.

Here is the radar unit mounted behind the grille. Can't see it? Exactly.

It may seem excessive to spend $400 on a radar detector, but that's only two tickets (depending on speed). Plus, you won't get points. My friend has a BMW 330, and he just bought a new cheap radar detector. He got busted doing 115 in a 75. You get what you pay for!

Does anyone have experience with the K40 product line? I know these are expensive ( I install quite a few for my porsche customers) and I haven't heard a horror story yet. But I would be interested to see how they perform in the real world, more than what the reviews say about them. thanks
