Anyone benefited from an aluminum radiator? I dont have my xpl ready for offroading yet but if the stock radiator is good enough then why replace it. Also im seeing a tranny cooler on my 91. Did it come stock with this? There's no oil cooler stock right? Is adding an oil cooler worth it?

The First gen 4x4 Came Stock with a Trans fluid Cooler up front , a Common Addition is to add a Second Stock fluid cooler and an External in line filter , as Well as a Drain plug and A Temp Gauge ! , I have Added the Second Stock cooler and Noticed the Actual Coolers are cooler to the touch than previous .

what do you mean by "second stock cooler"? and which fluid is it cooling?

Like stated above Transmission fluid cooler , your Explorer came stock with a Trans fluid cooler , and No there is Not a Stock Oil Cooler

Some people add a 2nd trans cooler to the transmission cooling system. They just grab a stock cooler from another explorer and mount it in series with the cooler you already have.

Not all 1st Gen x's came with a trans cooler but IIRC all of them that had the factory tow package did..

Either way, you need to keep the a4ld (auto trans) cool. They don't like heat and need all the help they can get.

I have a pair of after market plate style coolers on our X AND I use an remote oil filter adapter inline so I can use an FL1A type filter as an external trans filter.

For your Orig question. A 2 core radiator in good condition with a good fan/clutch setup is more than enough for the X, even when wheeling in the sand. That said, if your fan clutch is old/weak or your radiator is plugged up at all, you will have issues.

x2 I used to run an external trans cooler with an electric fan. Worked well!

Is it better to run them in series or to try to split the lines and run them parallel? The additional cooler I bought to add to the stock one is a larger stock one from a full size Bronco. If I run them in series, which one first? The smaller one? Radiator to small cooler to larger one?

I'd run them in series. That will allow the fluid more time to get cooler. If you run it in parallel the fluid isn't spending any more time in the coolers.

As to which aux cooler to flow into first, it won't matter.

If your somewhere where it gets down or below freezing I would recommend you run into the radiator after it goes into the aux coolers. That way the fluid won't be over cooled.

I have Mine Run In series After the Stock Radiator Cooler .

Just in case it helps.... Here is a shot of our trans cooler setup (with the aux fan).

The aux fan is off a 91 Geo Prism (Toyota Corolla).

This is an old shot of the external trans filter.

I change the that trans filter every time I do an oil/filter change. When the X was a DD that was about every 7000 miles.
