Radio Display is out, Please Help.

the best radio display fix

Gentlemen, I followed Rich C's advise and after all these months have had no problems with my new power supply. I also had a problem with my cd player. Using the same information supplied by Rich C. I was able to order a new unit. All steering wheel and back controls work. In essence for about $250.00 I have a brand new mach unit. If you like the stock stuff this is the only way to go.

Do-It-Yourself Radio Display Fix

The thing you have to look out for on replacing the power supply board is that the same problem will develop with the new board. They still have the same problem with them...they will eventually go out. Ironically I just fixed one for a Ford service manager who didn't want to wait on his local radio repair shop to fix it (nor did he want to pay $185 to fix it), so he had me fix it. Then I noticed that it had already been repaired once (saw the repair sticker on the radio and got him to confess). I've had another lady write me about having hers replaced twice now. So what I have seen, they tend to go bad again. If you are handy with a solder iron or know someone who is, you may want to take on the task of a permanent fix and save yourself the repetitive cost of a new power supply board; see:

You can see the testomonials from people who have had this work for them.

Best of Luck,
D Harrison

my display just went out also. about 75K miles. if i do "the fonz" and bang on the dash, it comes back on intermittently. as i have never been much attached to this radio and i dont have steering wheel controls, i will just replace it with an aftermarket. questions are "how hard is it to get the dash apart to remove the stereo" and "where can you get a panel to retrofit a normal DIN stereo into the humongous HOLE this will leave when removed!
thanks and sorry if these are a redundant questions. i did search the topic and scan the close to 200 posts but i am sort of lazy. at least i know this is a very common problem.

Radio display fix

I had the same problem on my '99 explorer, the radio works fine but no display. I found a repair shop that fixes the problem by rebuilding the display power supply and printed circuit board with new parts. They charge a flat fee of $97 and insure their work for a year. I have used mine for the past year and a half now since being fixed and it is workin great. Check out their website for more details.

Radio Display Fade fact

Let me just say that the flux (brown crud) everyone is scrubbing off IS NOT CONDUCTIVE!!!!
SOooo... the question then is, why does scrubbing the board work ???
Answer, the contacts are being moved and making contact again. The problem lies in a transformer. There are two coil transformers on the board which is in question. One is square ( ignore ) the other is a round black ring with two different colored wires wrapped around it. This is the one to focus on. If anyone is in doubt then try this next time your display goes out. Pull the radio out of the dash, leave the wires connected ( if you can ) pop off the top. Now with the radio on and hopefully the display is still dim or off, take a plastic tool , popsicle stick, or anything NON_CONDUCTIVE and gently push on one side or the other of the transformer ( black ring with wires) and watch the display. You should see it light up. If not then your wires are more seperated from the board more then mine. The common problem with working with these types of wires is that they are enamel coated , not like ordinary plastic coated wire. The enamal has to be totally cleaned off the ends that you're soldering to the board, otherwise no contact.Try this...and respond. GOOD LUCK, Be Patient, and Be carefull.

You can get a bezel adapter at FRY's, Best Buy. They sell for about $20. Tkae out the radio with the two clip adapters, disconnect the antenna and wire harnesses. After the radio is out you can remove the front bezel if you want by removing the 2 screws under the radio ( they're 2 small hex head screws )

Radio display out or itermittant

98 Explorer sport:
Power supply board is the problem PN #HWM0043. Obvious heat damage to the board but I made two attempts at soldering what were supposed to be potential problem componets with no success. In pulling the radio too many times I scratched the display lens.
This info is posted in several spots but here it is again for those surfing:
Auto Radio & Electronics (California) 800-442-4491 extension #562 will get you Cindy in parts. They sell a board kit that includes the board you need plus a couple others (don't know what they are for) Swapping the problem board is a no brainer. The boards are around $100.00 including shipping (already lost my invoice) and the face plate is $50.00.

Radio display problem

Hi,I tried the repair instructions offered by Duane harrison on ebay.As I am too ham fisted,I was not able to do the desoldering/soldering required for the fix.I contacted Duane again about the replacement swap board,he is very polite, answers his emails, and gives you all the info you need to know.I ordered the swap board, and in 4 days it arrived.Took out the radio,in less than 5 minutes,I had the new board in,5 minutes later back in the truck.I was sceptical in turning the radio on,It couldnt possibly work for only $69.00.I was wrong!Display works perfectly,RDS,clock,Everything! After driving around without it for so long,I forgot what it looked like.Duane Harrison knows his stuff! And I endorse him 100%.:D

MACH Radio in Explorer Display Problems

My 2000 has this issue and all the radios may eventually have it. There is a problem with the power supply in the radio head. There is a company who will fix it and fix other issues with this radio that come up before they happen (intermittant controls, subwoofer out) for about $100 and for keeping the original radio with Steering wheel controls is for me great.

add a 2000 explorer limited to the list of bad HUs... I removed my battery earlier today to get at the headlight and the damn display wont come back on now... I have 105,1XX miles so i guess mine lasted nearly twice as long, but still.

I have the same problem with my 2005 Ford Explorer Sport tract xlt radio and 6 Cd slots works fine the radio display fades out if I tap on it sometimes comes back on but still fades away after a short period of time. I am looking at replacing the radio with a Pioner unit probly better than trying to get the unit fixed. If any one has any ideas on how to fix this problem I would appriciate it beats spending the money on a replacement unit when this one works fine except for the lcd display. I just purchased the truck 2 months ago didn't notice it when I bought it.

Ford radio backlights

OK i do car audio and electronic repair i don't own an explorer but i do see this alot its in all fords that used this style radio there is a fix for it but i have tried it several times which all have failed ... the part that needs to be replaced is not the bulbs its a power supply right beside the CD player ... pop the top off your radio with back facing you remove the gold screw at top right there is 2 tabs on the circuit board itself that need to be bent straight one inside the silver shield the other beside the 7 blue wire plug which also needs to be unplugged now you have the part in hand that is bad ... sorry to say i have had no luck finding a replacement but when i do i will be sure to post it for you
