Recently bought a stock 92 explorer, and the radio didn't work at all. I checked the fuses- no dice, they were all good. Was going to check the connections and what not, but before i got around to it i noticed that it would occasionally put some strange deal on the screen. it seems to me that all the lights were illuminated on the screen, the code was something like 9ht, i didn't think to take a picture until after i'd turned the key and the code went away. Any ideas what this might be? more to the point, how would i go about fixing it? i'd like to hear music and use my gps at the same time.

IMO to fix it, go aftermarket. The plug connecting to the radio for power, illumination, etc should have a sticker on it labeling the wires and what they're for; grab a volt meter and check those. However, if it illuminated, then power and what not should be good, the problem is just a bad unit.

Like I said, go aftermarket; the stock radio is a single DIN, which is the same as a majority of aftermarket stereos...if you'd prefer to keep the stock stereo/look, visit a junk yard.

I actually have two stock stereos laying around from both of my Explorers if you'd want one.

Almost forgot to ask; does your 92 have the "premium" sound system or no?

Managed to get a shot of the code when it came up again this morning. I believe that it is not a premium sound system.

Easiest way to tell is to pull the radio out of the dash and look at the back of the unit. If the two plugs (one being power and the other speakers) are the same shape, it's not "premium". If the two plugs are different, or there is more than two plugs, it is a "premium" system (speaker wires go from the stereo through what looks like ethernet cable to a factory amplifier (usually located under the rear passenger side trim), where wires then go to the speakers. However, the first clue that there will be more than two plugs will be the factory subwoofer in the back.)

Not sure on the percentage of Ex's that had and didn't have premium sound, but both of mine did.
