Radio reception Lousy?AM static

I recently took over driving a 97 Ford Explorer XLT when the wife got a new vehicle. The radio is an AM/FM/Cassette with remote CD player in the center console. The problem I'm having is that some of the local FM stations aren't coming in that great and the AM side(which I listen to for local news/weather reports) has static and seems to pick up every Electrical Transformer hanging on the pole as you drive down the street. Any one have any suggestions other than replacement??

Make sure your ground is clean. (radio and antenna) That can cause alot of static.
