The bushings for the frame end of the radius arms are considerably worn and need replacement. Most of the places I've contacted for estimates have quoted $300+. A friend who owns a '92 XLT 4x4 suggests we try it ourselves.

My only concerns lies with the amount of work involved. The local Ford dealer and two other shops have mentioned that the entire front end, including axel and differential, have to be dropped out before the radius arms can be removed. On top of that, both shops couldn't guarantee the arms and brackets would not need replacement.

If anyone out there has suggestions, let me know. I'm not too worried about the cost, but my baby is close to 10 years old and it seems this problem is normal wear 'n tear on a 4x4.

Thanx,

I just replaced both radius arm bushings on my '93. It is not an easy process and you will need to plan on the better part of a day to get it done. To keep from dropping the entire front end I ground the rivets off and then punched them out with a punch and a hammer. then dropped the brackets and swapped the bushings. and then put it all back together with 1/2" grade 8 hardware. You will have to drill out the holes in the frame and on the brackets to 1/2" but that is fairly easy. If you need any help give me an e-mail at swankmi@efortress.com. I will be happy to help you as much as i can. Good luck!
