I have a 1997 Mazda B-4000 pickup that I am having problems shifting gears. Shifts fine with the clutch in and the engine NOT running. With the engine running you almost have to pound it into gear. Downshift is easier than upshift.

well be carefull shifting it hard like that, you could bend the shift fork in the trans.

how many miles are on it?

My first guess is that the sincros are going bad which makes it hard to shift.

Check the oil level in it first though and it's probably worth changing the oil. It doesn't hold that much.. It takes mercron V ATF..

It could be the sincro's depending on how it was driven.. Those transmissions are really sensitive to low oil level so definatly check it and report back..
