I have a 2001 Ranger Edge 3.0 5 speed std with 110,000 miles.

Heres the problem when I come to a stop the transmission will not go in 1st or 2nd gear , however if I turn the engine off it goes in gear, Locks up for no better way of saying it .

The clutch seems OK. I only have to push it in less than 2” to completely disengage the engine . I had replaced the transmission fluid with type F automatic trans fluid earlier as the Ford dealer suggested.

Thanks in advance Howard 1888 641 9798

I have never heard of using automatic transmission fluid in a straight shift tranny. What did the old fluid look like that you drained out of the tranny?

type F AFT

It's also listed as the proper fluid in the service manual Type F AFT for STD transmissions

Mercon ATF was the original specified fluid for your MT but it is no longer made. The replacement is Mercon V ATF.

As far as your problem going into gear, that is usually caused by a failing slave cylinder. You can try bleeding the hydraulic clutch line for a possible temporary solution but don't count on it. You probably need a new slave cylinder - fluid leakage may have already damaged the clutch, flywheel, pressure plate too. To replace the slave, you must drop the transmission.
