Hi everyone. I'm having a rattle when I shift from park to drive. I already need a new front drive shaft. Just wondering if this noise is from that thanks. 97 5.0 AWD

a bit hard to tell from what you mentioned but it could cause that sound. have you tried from drive to neutral yet to see if it happens there as well? also. while the car is parked, get underneath and see if you can move the driveshaft by shaking it. listen for any sound it makes and compare that to what your hearing. it wont sound the same but maybe enough to say its most likely the problem

I'd suspect your engine and/or trans mounts. They could me torn or soft and allowing the drive train to torque over a bit when you put it in gear, which may allow the exhaust system to rattle on something.

One rattle I had was the exhaust heat shield welds breaking (or rusting through, same diff.) I could've just torn the whole shield off or used big stainless hose clamps to secure them but for the time being I just grabbed some 12ga copper electrical wiring, sans insulation, and wrapped it around the ends of the shields a few times. That was several years ago, still holding up fine so I never got around to using hose clamps.

i did the same thing, but now i cant stop the rattle unless i lift the exhaust on the back mount a bit. I dread going back under there and unraveling the clamps and wires etc... i was like a mad seamstress zig zagging it. its almost to the point of bothering the crap out of me..ha

^ I just put a couple wraps around each end. Maybe you just didn't get it tight enough? It was no biggie when I did it, about 2 minutes most of which was going to get and strip the wire.

Sorry I took so long everyone but I tried shifting from N to D and there was no rattle. I will try to have someone look shift while I look underneath.

^ If it's any part of the exhaust you can just crawl under there and bang around on the pipes, cats, muffler, resonator and heat shields with the palm of your hand to see if anything makes noise. Engine need not be running nor transmission shifted.

Another common minor rattle could come from exhaust hanger welds breaking so the hanger is vibrating against the exhaust, or whole exhaust moving from the hanger break so now hitting something else.
