Stall when shifting from R to D?

deerfarm,
I was advised that it’s not recommended to shift into drive while still moving backwards as this could damage the transmission. However, it would not cause a stall, which is why I recommend taking the vehicle to the dealer if this stall occurs again.

I agree that although you shouldnt shift until you've stopped it still should not stall because i bet 90% of folks dont come to a complete stop and it could be dangerous if you stalled while backing out onto a busy street.

JohnnyDop,
You’re right that stalling in that situation is not normal. It’s still recommended to come to a complete stop to keep the transmission from being damaged.

My girlfriends 2015 explorer is doing this same thing.
She will be backing out into the highway and when she shifts into drive, it will die. She has taken it to the dealership twice. 1st time they said it had a TSB, so they reprogrammed something and said its fixed. This time they kept it for a week and put over 200 miles on it trying to make it die and couldn't so they had her come drive it with them. When she drove it, it didn't die, but they told her that they could see the problem was that she was shifting to drive before it came to a complete stop. They gave it back to her and said that was all they could do....Now what ??

Welcome to the Forum.:wavey:
Depending upon how fast she was going when quickly shifting to Drive, it is possible that is the problem. Have her come to a stop before shifting to 'D' and see if that solves the problem. I know that if you are driving forward and accidently put it into reverse, the engine will die. Perhaps the opposite is also true. First thing to do is have her change her driving style and then go from there if it still happens.

It only does this every once in a while, but it makes me nervous to see her back out into the highway and then hear her starting it back up.
I have seen it happen a couple times and she is still moving when she shifts into drive but barely.
I just can't believe it's normal for this thing to die if there is any momentum in the transmission when you shift to the opposite direction. Sounds pretty dangerous to me.
P.S. This explorer has about 3,000 miles on it...

It's to prevent transmission damage. If she is barely moving backwards when shifting to Drive, then I don't think it should stall. I'm sure most of us don't come to a complete stop either.
I had a '64 Caddy very, very long ago. Did I say it was a while ago? I was driving down the highway and went to reach for something on the dash. As I did so, my are caught the transmission shifter and put it into Reverse, the engine cut out right away. Shifter back to Neutral, started the engine, back to Drive and away I went.
