My 2001, Explorer Sport 2WD makes an incrdibly loud banging noise when it goes over bumps. I replaced the rear shocks in hopes of the noise going away. It hasn't.
The noise is loud almost to the point of sounding like the suspension is bottoming out. The ride isn't too great over those bumps either. Could it be the leaf springs? I have the classic sport lean to the driver's side.
