Mine is a '99 and it does have some in and out play and so did my '95. They both had the limited slip rear end. I don't think you're gonna get away from it.

And welcome:)

There shouldn't be any rubber o rings around or near the c-clips. There are washers that fit inside the spider gears that the c-clips ride on. Some amount of place is ok, generally there is about 1/4" of an inch.

Well I don't mean to be picky but according to my Haynes manual there are.

"Don't lose or damage the rubber O-ring which fits in the axle shaft groove under the C-lock"

taken from page 8-13 section 19.7

So I would assume that on the later models there are. :D

I've installed 2 lockers in 8.8s there are no rubber gaskets anywhere near the the axle c-clips. :)

I've had both my '95 and my '99's apart and no o-rings either. I'm not callin you a lier I'm just sayin that neither of mine had them.

Well you may both be right. But I had them in my 98 3.73 LSD which I stripped to replace the clutch pack.

But I can't think of anything else that would lead to excessive end play. I assume that the correct bearings where used.

You may have just answered a question for me :D I have been trying to find the answer to what the drive ratios were. Everyone keep telling me to look at the stickers on the doors, but I dont have any with ratios listed. How did you find yours out ?

There is a tag on one bolt on the diff case which tells you the ratio. But I think you'll find all the RHD explorers have the 3.73 LS diff fitted.

cool, probably have to change when I get my lift and 33's on

PROBABLY NOT! THERE's no need for a regear.. dont listen to this board!! if ur going to change, go the other way when u lift and get 33s.. try soemting in the 2's range.. AHAH KIDDING!

I was thinking of 4.10 as this seems the popular choice, any idea what I am actually loking for - bit lost on this!

Cheers :D

You would have to change both front and rear ring gears and pinions. I think with the associated costs this would not be worth it with the 3.73's that we have and 33's only being a little larger than the 31.5's fitted as standard. Just my opinion. Have you managed to fix the end float yet ?
