Rear Diff fill problem

So, I go to the local lube center and they do their business. Well, after what seems like an unusually extended oil change, they tell me they have screwed-up the rear diff fill cap and it's cross threaded. They said if I take it out again it will need repaired.

I don't even bother asking for a repair because I don't want these monkeys turning another bolt on my X.

What is the best way to repair this? I was thinking tap it out with the same thread and replace the cap. Are oversized fill caps available?

Ideas?

You may be able to re-tap the existing hole to original threads. Also - the plug may be what's cross-threaded - not the hole. Check that first - easier to replace the plug than re-tap.

Be very, very careful of any filings from the tap.

I think you'll be fine with either a new plug or tapping/chasing the threads.

Those 8.8 plugs are magnetic so just clean it well and you shouldn't have to worry about any tillings or shavings from the tap.

Anyone know what thread I should look for so I can buy the tap?

If you can take out the plug and find a chase size that will match just but that same size and thread count tap.

I thrid that.. They messed it up.. they should have to get it fixed...

and I don't mean them fix it.. if they can't put in a diff fill plug.. how can they fix anything..

Definately try to have someone else do the work and make them pay.

Or....maybe you can do it yourself but make them pay for the tools you had to buy, definately not as easy to get them to do that though (but I've done that before, free tools!)
