I don't think I am calling it the correct name, but I'm dealing with the bearings that hold the axle shafts coming out of the rear differential. I have one of those bearing that appears to have come apart. There's a significant amount of play in the axle as it comes out of the differential, resulting in a fluid leak around it.

Does anyone know what you'd call those? Do you have to completely remove the rear diff to replace them, or, are they removable without pulling the cover off?

Dealing with an 03 Eddie Bauer v8. independent rear suspension.

Ford shop manual says it can be done with the housing in the vehicle, Ford actually calls that bearing the "stub shaft housing bearing" Ford also calls for some special tolls for removal and installation of the bearing and seal.

Do you know if they come out the side of the differential, or, if the rear cover needs to come off?

They come out the side with a slide hammer and a special puller, I tried to attach the instructions from the shop manual but the file was too big. I'm a Ford technician so I have access to manuals.

Is the puller the same one that would be used for an interior axle bearing, like on an F150?

Something like that might work if there's enough room behind the bearing, Ford calls for a puller similar to what you would use for a pocket style bearing.

I think I might still have one of those floating around. It's been years since I've used it. Thanks!
