any ex, with the same gearing from a 3rd gen.

you would need the same gear ratio. less its a 2x4 then w/e gear ratio you want from a 02-05 ex.

[so i can install a 2001 or 2000 ford explorer rear axle assembly as long as its 3.55 geared corect(thats my gearing 3.55)

so a 2001 ford explorer with 3.55 gears will fit?

Do you have a two door or four door?

If you have a 2003 Explorer Sport (2 Door), then yes you can use an axle from 2000 or 2001 Explorer with the same gear ratio.

If you have a 2003 Explorer 4 door, then no you cannot. You must use a 2002-2005 rear differential because the 3rd Generations have Independent rear suspension and not a solid axle.
