Hi, I have a rearend howl from the rear diff, I know this because it changes with speed, usually anywhere from 90-120kph. I went to ford for the updated kit but its no longer in production. So does this mean I'm screwed or can I get a kit that will cause the howl to disappear for good on Ebay? Can anyone let me know as this spring I want to fix that for good.

If all the ford kit included was new bearings and seals, then you can get a master bearing and seal kit from Rockauto.com or similar.

Just make sure it's for the 8.8 IRS SUV vs the 8.8 solid axle or the mustang cobra 8.8.

So what will I need, and why does the sound even happen for?

I don't know enough to give a detailed explanation as to why it makes a sound, I just know that it has something to do with the OEM carrier bearings going bad.

You would need something like the USA Standard Gear bearing and seal kit part number USA11042 (includes Timken brand bearings) - about $95 on Rockauto.com.

A driveline shop would need to install this unless you have experience setting up axle gears and the tools to do it. All told it is going to be an expensive job because of the labor involved (I would guess over $1000), but if you remove the differential assembly yourself and bring them that and the bearing and seal kit then it might just be a few hundred.

Oh okay thanks, I'm good with vehicles so I can take apart the diff assembly and give it to my mechanic I use for major repairs. Now I have to figure out whats the rattling coming from the mid-rear of truck and annoying whistling sound.

Here's a writeup that will help you drop the diff.

I wouldn't disassemble it further than just removing it...just drop it off with the other parts and he should be able to take care of the rest.

Just remember to make sure you put the carrier bearing caps back on the same side they came off, and the same orientation. There should be a mark or symbol on the cap and the side of the diff so you can line them back up. If not, mark the carrier bearing caps before you remove them.

Hi thanks alot for the help will take all advice I can get. Currently truck is at Dixie Ford where I live as my Ball joint/Wheel bearing(not sure) went on the right rear side. I was bringing it to mechanic but he was busy so I had my free towing(CAA/AAA) Bring it to the closest garage which was Ford(gulp). Though they can't screw me over as I know what is wrong with my truck so they can't say oh we found this is wrong. Driver side pretensioner, rear diff, both rear abs speed sensors, parking brake doesnt engage, #8 cylinder exhaust manifold port leak, rear struts are overdue, rear brakes are getting there, and o2 sensor circuit(bank 2, sensor 2). Mad because i put a new black billet grille, projector Halo fog lights, and the chrome explorer logo on hood lip spaced like how the range rover, flex and 2014 explorer sports do on hood lip.

I have an 04 4.0 AWD Ex. I replaced the bearings.
Now it still growls at low speed in sharp turns. I ordered a Yukon clutch kit from Autozone today. I will put that in with a new tension spring. Hope that fixes it.

I changed the fluid as it was due and its not even noticeably loud, you can hear it but at the level its at now it just sounds normal. before it was noticeably loud and got annoying when letting off gas at high speeds (90-120kph). Replaced both transfer case and front diff with synthetic as I've been using syn for everything except brakes/power steering and transmission). The bearings will be replaced inj the summer but I want to avoid the same crappy Made In China Parts OEM used.
