This forum is great. I like the answers, and no smart remarks like some places.

Anyway, after reading a few threads I see reference to rear end noises. Mine has a very slight growl almost like a shushing sound a wind leak would make. It's there under acceleration and slightly different when you back off. So it's gears not bearings.

Since the rear differential is mounted to the frame, is this normal? I went on a test drive w/ a very competent trans guy (shop owner) and this was so little, it was never heard @ that time. Just worrying again.

I have the same problem accept mine is very loud when im coasting its not there but when i hit the has and go its sounds like im dragging something

the pinion has probably created a groove in your ring from becoming misaligned somehow.

I have this problem in my Mustang. No ill effects other than the sound that is drowned out by the Magnaflows.

i have yet to have this whine or noise on the Ex. I can tell you this that my heep with 12yrs and 150k the rear end makes some noise to some i extent and from what i read its normal.

With these Exs, and the Diff mounted to the frame the noise gets louder. And since most people are more used to cars than trucks and ANY noise alarms them. Rather having been in trucks all their lives would think the Ex is rather quiet, for a truck. I'd inspect it look for seals leaking or any looseness or anything visibly wrong and keep a close eye or ear on it.
If it get worse then worry, . ..imho.

Had the same problem, could be one of two things; wheel bearings go alot and the other is that the rear difs on the new gen ex's are notorious for going. If it does it only while turning its the wheel bearing, if it does it any other time(for instance driving straight) its the rear diff. I had to replace mine last summer and depending on what part you have it's a 1000 or 1200 dollar part :(

i had the same problem with my 99 explorer i drive it like that for 2 years then it finally locked up and i just replaced the rear end i had 255,000 miles on it when finally went out
