I was driving my explorer to work when my wheel flew off my truck. The axle snapped right by the backing plate and all my sheet metal behind the drivers side rear wheel got all mangled... luckily i was going about 10 MPH and i slid on my drum for about 15 feet. so now I need a new rear. Ive seen axles from 98's with disc brakes on ebay will this be a simple bolt on to my 1992 Explorer with a 4.0? Or is there fabrication involed? Are there more practical swaps from other years/cars disc brakes are not a necessity at all.

however if going to use an axle with the rear disc brakes in your 92, you are going to have to change part of the proportioning system in the brakes

what mods with altering the proportioning system involve? A new master cylinder?

anyone?>>

I had a 4.10 disc braked axle under my 91. I I had no problems with the brake proportioning system.

You will have to bend new hard lines for the axle and get the early model flex line and t block in the center of the axle. You can use 2 late model passenger side caliper hoses on the axle and then use the early model t-block and flex hose to frame. Bend new tube between the tee and the caliper hoses.
The parking brake will require some work. Part numbers are here on the site.
You may have to adjust the master cylinder pushrod, but a better idea is to replace the master cylinder with a later model from 95. A search should turn up the part number. I dont think I have it any more.

Its much easier to get the late axle with the newer parts than to repair the existing.
