I would think that 5.5 would be right i have a 93 but im almost sure the someone offers a spring over axle kit for it, and that will give you about 5.5, 6 inches. Try this site called jackit.com.

5.5 wow thats more than i was thinking I was thinking about 3 would give just enough

do you want it to fit, or do you want to be able to flex and cycle the suspension fully without it rubbing. If its strictly a street truck then you could get away with just a couple inches. If you actually want to use your truck and have some fun then you are going to need like 5 inches. The main issue though, either way, is that thats a really wide tire. thats where most of the rubbing is going to come from.

I want suspension to cycle properly with no excessive rubbing but I dont want a huge wide open wheel well thats useless. I have even pondered 285/75r16 or a 305/70r16 since they are a little skinnier. Bottom line is I want a 33 inch tire with very minimal lift

285/75/16s should be no problem at all in the rear. Every truck is a little different though as far as how the suspension has settled and what not. I would say its about 90% that you won't have a problem with just a couple inches of lift. I think there is someone on there who is running 285s with no lift, but I think its a street truck. You can always go to a tire shop and see if they fit. Most places won't have a problem with that as long as you are going to buy some tires there. Just don't spend all day having them put on every size in their inventory, lol.
