Rear view mirror.

I need to replace the rear view mirror mounted on the inside of the windshield on our 99 Sport that has the slide control for the auto head lamps. I looked at the replacement mirror & can not figure out how to remove the old one. I did a search & came up with a thread from 2003 showing how to remove the mirror from a Ford but not an Explorer using a special Ford tool, but the retainer clip looks different then the one on my mirror. Here is a pic of the retainer clip on my replacement Ford mirror. Sorry for the fuzzy pic.

Looks like turning the mirror vertical is the key. (Step 2)

FYI for 97

This solution is not valid for 97.
There is no "bottoming out" on turning the mirror 90deg on the 97.
Just trying to save someone time here.
