I have a spare engine with a good block out of a 92 EB, looking to rebuild for a spare/upgrade motor.

I am not looking for more power, in fact, what modification will be done will primarily be done in an effort to increase mileage.

However, since I don't have a lot of experience with these 4.0s, I figured I would ask you guys who have been into them a few times, any recommendations for parts? I doubt I can raise compression much without going to premium fuel or reprogramming, and I am not sure about whether I want to invest the time in tuning.

So that being said, recommendations on parts if I am just going for flow and efficiency without having to worry about tuning or high octane? A little machining like P&P and balancing the rotating assembly is a given, as well as any machining on the intake manifold. The engine will need new pistons anyways since one of the old ones is cracked, so, no worries. Heads are good, but I don't mind replacing them.

Darn.... I guess that doesn't leave much for you guys to talk about....

si valves, a 410 cam, matched injectors, under drive pulleys and efan all help slight power and mileage, all without tune or higher octane

Headers are a waste of money unless you have head work and some p+p done to the intake.or if you just like the look or have extra cash

does a 410 cam require longer pushrods or valves? Would a 95tm head be better a better match to that cam?

Not going to bother with headers..... If I put headers on, then I need to get good ones, then I need to get a larger high flow cat and larger mandrel bent exhaust to even think about taking advantage of the headers. I'll do some machining to the heads, but, for a fuel mileage application, I am most concerned with low RPMs..... so I think the stock manifolds will work fine with a little port-matching and cleaning up.

Both cams need longer pushrods.a 95tm with your stock bottom end will give you 10:1 needing 90+gas. 410 is just a good all around cam, nothing to crazy.if you want power then yes a 422 is a way better cam but you need dual springs and a tune would be ideal

Oh yeah.... I forgot about that.... Well, with a decent P&P, the 93tm heads should flow pretty well I imagine, enough for my purposes. I'll tune eventually, it is just a pain in the butt to do considering it is harder for me to get on a dyno these days, so all I can really tune with is a wideband, ear and.... the specially calibrated butt dyno.....

So, anyone have any suggestions on who to talk to about machining my heads, or to buy some good ones?

Any input on pistons or rods, or just stock replacement gonna be my best option?

Being a 92 i would put new heads on.i can send you a link.stock piston and rods are fine.just get it bored and your crank ground.also a mellings 328 helps alot.

I was going to say or post your link as a reference! He sounds like he want the same thing!!

You know im down to help anybody and your not the first to go that route but will be one of the first ive help from the start.you can give him pointers with me as how it turned out.biggest thing i always say is its costly and do it right the first time, spend the money if your going to do it,right that is!!

yes ive spent just over $2000 so far.... but ive gotten new things that i really didnt have to replace. then again im not done, i need need a few more major parts.
so i agree its not cheap, but it will be done right and ill be less likely to have problems from things

$2000 for 200000+ more miles and knowing you built it!PRICELESS! !!

lol, once I rebuild my spare engine and throw it in my ex, the only thing on my ex that won't be new will be most of the body and the transmission. Transmission is looking like it will give me at least another couple years of worry free service, but I will make myself a built spare whenever I run across another decent transmission.

I don't mind another $2000 honestly..... I have spent around $4000-$5000 in parts on this explorer since picking it up in August, and I haven't even started the body work yet..... Need to replace one dogleg and rocker, coat of paint. I've got to send my brother templates for the steel I need cut for my new headlight assemblies (since I suck at CAD drawing apparently)..... Lot to go yet on this explorer..... I'm still tossing around the idea of a diesel swap, but I haven't come across any engines for cheap enough to actually make the swap worth it, especially since I am getting 24mpg out of an engine that is really starting to show its age and the fact that it sat for a year.

Another year and my $350 Explorer will be a brand new Explorer..... and will have cost almost as much as a brand new Explorer too.

Anyways, thanks Xeek for the list of part numbers.

So, what is the deal on the Keith Black pistons, is that a deeper dish than the stock pistons?

No and yes.you can order them more dished.they are just lighter and forged,no need for you or anyone really as the stock ones can handle boost or nos up to 300ish hp

I see..... Well.... being lighter though..... Every little bit helps you know.... and the price difference isn't that great. If I did get them with a deeper dish, I could run the 95tm heads and keep the compression around stock if those are better heads..... IDK, like I said, just trying to consider what will be best over the long term. Durability isn't really something I worry about given how stout the OHV 4.0 is anyways, but, efficiency... that is definitely something that could see some improvement on this engine.

There is no real difference in flow of a 95 tm head or a 93tm in aftermarket heads.either set up will be fine just match the pistons with the heads,90-94 pistons with 93tm heads,95-98 pistons with 95tm heads.93tm heads seem to be cheaper though, not in as much demand as the 95tms
