Rebuilt transmission

This is for a friend of mine. 2004 explorer cot, advance trac rcs, 4.0. My friend said he had his transmission rebuilt. We installed it and filled it. It will shift into reverse every time. It will shift into drive sometimes and when it does it won’t shift passed first gear. I know this is a broad question but what do I have to inspect? What can cause this issue? Please don’t be to hard on me, I haven’t messed with transmissions before.

welcome to EF! what happens if you manually put it in 1/2nd? does that get it into 2nd? there are a multitude of causes, but knowing if it goes into Manual 1/2 will help narrow it down.
