I have a 97 Mountaineer 5.0 that need a trans. I'm debating whether to have it rebuilt locally or order online. Has anyone used an online store?

I would rather take my chances on one from a junkyard. The 4R70W is very reliable, more so than most mechanics or online rebuilders in my opinion. You could rebuild it yourself, there is a step by step with pictures in the trans section of this forum and the Haynes trans manual was helpful to me.

I will rebuild anything over just crossing my fingers on a used part, especially something that's a PITA to remove like a tranny.

I have rebuilt my AOD-E in my Mustang and I had the guy upgrade it to 4R70W internals and added extra clutch discs and more mods then I care to remember.

All said and done it was cheaper then a reman and will handle more HP then I can throw at it.

Just in case anyone does not know, the AOD-E and the 4R70W are basicly the same tranny with he main difference being the W in the 4R70W. It stands for Wide Ratio which means you have a lower first and second gear. The 4R70W also had several upgrades over the AOD-E which is why a lot of Stang guys use the later parts in the earlier tranny.

I feel lucky that my tranny guy is a drag racer who was very eager to upgrade every tranny I ever took to him. I can see where a tranny shop might not be very mod friendly or knowledgeable to upgrades.
