I would like to add a remote starter to my 97 ex. Are there any that work well with my factory security system? Any suggestions?

Thanks

the search button will yield very useful results. this has been talked about very recently.

but i have the viper 790xv which is the 2 way pager/lcd/ alarm.remote starter. love it.

I don't know anything that would work with Ford Factory alarm system. If you decide to get an aftermarket ones, CompuStar is a good one worth considering.

the compuster is great.. but its $700 +. i only found a few shops scattered around the east coast that will install it too. maybe xfactor knows more.

Aftermarket is usually (if not always) better than factory. Sure the alarms with the LCD remotes are neat, but the remotes are not very useful. Alpine has some good systems and DEI does too.

bulldogsecurity.com works well and it's cheap.

A co-worker of mine who owns a Probe has one. It has nice useable features. He got it installed for $375 in the Canarsie, Brooklyn area. My regular car alarm guy who normally do not carry it wants $450 just to get the system. Like jssong said it is a great alarm system if you got the money for it.

I just had the sidewinder 6500 ESP installed and its awesome. The remote start has some incredible range so I can start it walking out of school, very nice.

another vote here for the compustar. (if your looking to spend that much) ive had it im my X for about 4 years and never had any problems with it. the range on mine is about 1/2 mile. the new models i think have a range of 1.5 miles. oh and i paid $550 installed for it but that was when it just came out.

I just finished installing a ford factory remote start and keyless entry system. Ford calls it the silver system. I paid $130 for it on ebay. The guy has an auction going on right now for the same system. It came with everything I needed to install it including all the PATS stuff (I dont think 97's have that). Anyway, it had pretty good instructions and I did it myself but it took me 14 hours. So now I have one remote that does keyless entry and remote start. It also turns on my rear defogger if I want. I'm very happy with it.

I like the idea of the Ford silver system. Just have to find it now. No luck on ebay right now.

does this mean I would be able to install on a 97?

Yes. Whether you have PATS or not you can install the Ford systems. The directions tell you what to do if you have to hook it up and they also explain what to do if you dont have to use it. I've had mine for a few months now and I am 100% happy with it.

I also had the factory alarm system on my X. I then had Ford to add the remote starter to it. They did. Been happy ever since. No more cold mornings on cold leather, no more hot days on hot leather. It would only cost you maybe $300 to have Ford todo that, or do it yourself and save even more money. I had them install it because it is gauranteed for as long as you own your car I beleive. You will be glad you did. IMHO, nothing beats a Ford Alarm, except theifs. But if they want it, they are going to get it anyway.

The thing I like about it is, that the doors stay locked while it is running, and as soon as they step on the brake, the engine dies. You have to put the key in while it is running to keep it activated. Money well spent.
