Remote car starter woes...

Hello folks,

Having problems with my remote starter and was hoping someone could help out. I bought the truck used with the car starter already in (the make is a Head Start and the model # is 4025). So, needless to say I don't have the user manual.

The remote starter has worked flawlessly for 2 years now. What has just started is that when I start the truck with the remote starter the starter wants to keep engaging after the truck is started. No problems when I use the key, only when I use the remote starter.

With no manual and no experience with remote starters I'm a little weary to go ripping things apart. I suspect that the remote starter is not getting corect feedback that the engine is running. This leads me to believe that the problem lies in the wire that goes from the remote starter to the #1 cylinder spark plug wire. I can't see anything wrong with this wire but I really haven't gotten into it yet.

Any ideas?

Maybe see if the manufacturer has a website? Maybe you can get the install manual?

Perhaps its just busted?

Depends on make and mfr of remote starter...I haven't done it myself, but there was a thread not too long ago about the wire going to the tach for the remote starter to know the engine was running. Good luck!

They are the only ones I found online but they're in Canada.

Edit: Oh, I just saw that's where you are too....maybe Head Start is a popular brand up there, but I can't find any other websites for them.

Thanks for all the help folks. I think I've got it nailed to loose wiring at the back of the base unit. I pushed all the wires in and the truck is starting fine now.

I guess sometimes you get lucky

Make sure you secure those down very well and do right so this doesn't have to be done again, again.

DEI uses a tach sensor wire in the dash. Get a wiring diagram from the alarm manf and see if it has a wire going to the tach wire.

Just my 2 cents. I installed a Bulldog remote start and it had two modes: 1) tach and 2) tachless. The first requires a wire to the tachometer and will crank the engine until it reaches a certian RPM indicating that it has started. In tachless mode it will try to start the engine quickly, then crank over a 2nd time for longer. I had a bunch of install problems so I went with the tachless mode to make it easier. The modes are chosen via a switch on the unit.

Make sure you hook it up to the tach! Many starters have been burnt out if not hooked up in this manner!!

In my case, the unit has a switch for tach or tachless mode. You are correct though, it can just spin the starter forever if it is expecting a singal from the tach wire.
