I recently got a 97 Explorer XLT with Power door locks, but don't have a remote key. I used to have a Remote start/lock set on my old truck, and have thought about getting one on the Explorer.

I came across this one http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_75578_Viper-Responder-LE-4806V.html which seems like a decent price, but don't have any idea how to install it. I have experience/feel comfortable doing electrical and wiring work since I have installed stereos and speakers etc before.

I just wanted to get an idea from anyone that has experience with this, is it a real ***** to install, or is it fairly simple if you can read the sheets and have some skill installing things like that....or is it easier to buy something like that and pay the 100 or so bucks to have Geek Squad or Car Toys install it?

I have a '97 XLT with manual trans that came with power locks, but not remote locking. a few years ago when the mechancal key locks were getting hard to use I found I could buy a remote lock system off ebay from China for $13 delivered to my door that included 2 remotes and the receiver. It was set up to power lock actuators, but I used that power output to operate a couple 12v relays to provide contact closure for lock/unlock and just wired those to the rear rocker switch above the jack storage. That area, just ahead of the wiper fluid tank, was a good place to mount the receiver, too. It has worked flawlessly for years now.

Replacing the factory remote for lock/unlock is cheap and easy. Adding a remote start is a pain and often easier to let someone else put it in since most shops get it done quick and inexpensive. 97 shouldn't have PATS. If the truck had PATS you have to add in a bypass module or mount a chip in the steering column.

Just buy a new key fob and program it to work on your truck? The instructions to program it come with the key fob or can be found online. no need to buy a new unit.
