Ford radios have two little holes on each side of the stereo. They are used to remove the stock HU; you can do this by buying a radio removal tool from any parts store or from the dealer. It is also possible to do with a coat hanger, but for the little amount the tool costs, I'd just buy it.

first off, I'm pretty sure the little holes weren't on anything newer than 01....so he can't use the keys. But if you can, I agree with jayhawk get the tool i tried to do it with coat hangers and ended up bruising my hand from pushing on the thing so hard, I think you need to remove your dash and wiggle it out until you can unplug all the stuff out of that back, and then slide it out. check right above your knobs for the heat/ac there might be to screws you need to take out i believe 7mm. but then again i may be compleltly wrong...i always think i am when i try to give advice. :(

my ex-g/f's parent's 02 sport had the exact same style as the previous models, the 4 door explorer's I believe were the ones that differed.

Judgin by your username you're going to be installing a good stereo then? I'd suggest running new wiring all around as well.

Whoops, looks like I may be wrong. Shows how much I know about stereos.

hey it's ok first time i saw a post like this, i said the same thing that you said...then got corrected gotta learn somehow ;)

Well i figured it out pretty easy. I just unscrewed the screws that hold the stereo console then just pulled out the whole thing. Once out you can just squeeze those little clips on the stock stereo and it slides right out. Easy to do if you have that little tool. Took about 5min to do.
