Sorry, my Haynes has gone AWOL.
I have never in my life messed with c clip stuff. I know I need to take the diff cover off, but where do I go from there?
I didn't want to do this, but it seems in order to replace all the e-brake stuff that this is the best way to go.
Thanks,
Russ

OK, Russ

It's been a while but as I recall, there's a bolt on the carrier that will free up the pin. Raise the rear so you can rotate the wheels/carrier easily. ROtate until you see a bolt recessed into the carrier. Remove it.

You should then be able to push the 1"ish pin out. Push the axles inward as much as possible and remove the c-clips. Pull the axles straight out and presto!

Hope that helps.

On a side not, I've never pulled the axles to change the ebrake goodies. Yeah, it's a pain but a good pair of needle nose vice grips makes it a lot easier.

Thanks.
I am not sure my hands are steady enough any more to do the needle nose, but I may try. Depends on how patient I am feeling I guess.

take off the rear diff cover,,

look at the carrier for the gears, around the one side is the gear, on other there is a small bolt head, 10 mm i think,, pull that bolt,

rotate the carrier till you can see the cross pin in the middle, pull it out slowly

rotate the carrier so you can see inside the gears inside,

with rims off push in on the axle from the outside,

look inside the gears in the carrier again, you will see the c clips that need to be removed, take them out , maybe use a small magnet if you have one, if not a pair of needlenose pliers will work,,

after the clips are removed , pull out on the axles where the wheels fasten on,

that will give you plenty of room to do the e brake,,

after the e brake is fixed,, reverse the description i just gave and it will show you how to put it back together,,

also the 10mm bolt breaks sometimes :(. Just be aware of that.

Thanks, all.
Will have to see what is what when I can get to it. Never got the truck in the garage, and there is about 4-6 inches of snow on the driveway, so I won't be doing it right now.

Another alternative is to do the parking brake with the axles in, I've done it that way many times. Takes a bit of coercion but messing with that fluid is a PITA if you don't have to. If you do have the axles apart I absolutely suggest changing the rear bearings and seals as well. That would be worth the extra work.
