removing the stock shift knob

i was attempting to remove the stock shift knob on my 91 explorer and realized that i dont know how to do it. anyone with some input would be appreciated.

Jeff, not sure how it is on the Ex's, but on the few cars I used to own with manual trannies, the shift knob screwed off.
 






tried that, it just slips and kinda makes a "pop" sound

thanks anyways tho =/
 






On my '92 it was splined on and you just had to pull up really hard.
 












mine fell off when i was racing a jeep. i pulled the shifter so hard back into second i ripped the knob off i dont recommend that but you can just yank the heck out of it. i replaced mine with a nice machined aluminum knob. :)
 






yeah, i finnaly just hack sawed it to death, but the shaft was too thick. so i had to file the hell out of it and i'm still not done. that'll teach me to mess with it :)

p.s. by the way, despite momentarily missing second gear, i beat the heck out of the jeep
