My rack and pinion was going bad since the steering keep locking up..

My brother and I replaced the rack and pinion with a new one from autozone.. and then bled the steering and all that.. it came out a better than before but still is not normal as it is hard to steer like 1/4 from full circle going either left or right.. after turning the steering past 1/4 it would be pretty smooth.. and then when i let go the steering as I turn, it would turn back until that 1/4 part and then I would have to tug it back to center..

My brother and I figured that it is the power steering pump.. so while we were at it, I decided to buy a new power steering pump and a brand new steering pressure hose.. my brother installed it all back today since I am gone on a vacation and he is saying it is the same.. he is not sure what is wrong..

Apparently he is saying that there is some whine in it..

Any ideas, guys? We are VERY baffled with the result since we literally replaced every steering components so how can it not operate properly?

I am trying to finish it up as soon as possible because I am going to take it to college.. I am going to send it into a shop for a headgasket repair since it is seeping out coolant fluid because the block and header is rusted up so there is holes between those 2 parts.. definitely going to be a pretty high bill, but it is going to be worth it in the end since I would like to use this explorer for like 4 more years and I do not want to take my new explorer to college

Anyway, hope you guys got an idea about what is wrong. Any input would be very much appreciated..

Thanks in advance

P.S. In case you want to know, my Explorer is a 1995 XLT 4.0 OHV

I wish I could help you but unfortunitly owrs is doing the same thing. I need the same help.

really?

have you replaced all of the components?

Right now I am thinking it might be the joint on the steering shaft.. It might be binding the steering shaft so.. But I might send it into shop and see what they says.. I will laugh when they decide to pull some BS as I just replaced everything sofar.. I read it somewhere on this forum, one guy said it cost him 300 dollars for the replacement joint.. I really hope that it is not 300 bucks lol

The ball joints seem fine. They are free moving. I replaced the outer tierods but no better. Was just hoping to save some steps. The steering was fine until my wife blow a idler pully and I said the heck with it and drove it home to fix it. Replaced the idler and now the steering is messed up. Father- in -law and I bleed the pump but all it is doing is getting worst.

intermediate steering shaft, try a search for this :)

Yours is bad, it has slack and likely dead spots in it

did you find out what was going on?

I had the rack & pinion replaced on the 96X and the first one they put in was defective. So, just because its new doesnt mean its good.

no promblems now? I think i got a bad power steering pump I just put it on. It worked fine for a little now its messing up again. How much is a Rack? and you said you had it installed what did that run? thanks in advance
