Replaced EGR valve. Check engine light still on!?

Try NAPA. I replaced the one on my '95, and it didn't cost that much. Took about 30 seconds to replace.

Here is the photo that I sent arturo. I figured it might help people out in the future. Also, "black plastic thing" is a highly technical term that means: I don't know what the f*** it is or what it does, but it's part of the system.

The term black plastic thing is very accurate, I've heard people form NASA talking about "black plastic things in their rockets!!!!!!!!! LOL :talking:

I've been checking up with the ford dealers down here in Mexico City and they don't have the sensor in stock. I wonder if anyone would like to send me one, I can send money via Pay Pal or whatever.

Thanks a lot :bounce:

my cel light was on for the same for about 3 months. finally cleaned the egr valve had the battery disconnected for about two hours hooked everything back and let it idle with ac off/on and the such. took it out for a spin cel never came on. came back home got ready to leave and i'll be d@mned the cel was on again. now just have to find the time to have autozone scan the codes again.

sorry for the long, lack of structure post.

and thanks for mentioning the dfpe, i will probably go ahead and replace it.

I finally found the DPFE sensor, it will cost 90 dollars but they do have it in stock!!!!
Now I have another problem. With the alllignment, they performed a suspension checkup.
When lifted , my front wheels would move up and down like with half an inch of travel. Not too much but it is causing my new Scorpion AT tires to wear rapidly.
I know what the problem is but can't figure out what the word in english is for "ROTULA".

If this sounds familiar to any of you guys please let me know what to do.

Thanks a lot, :bounce:

That black thing that you don't know the name of is the EGR Electronic Vacuum Regulator (EVR) Solenoid. It controls the vacuum output to the EGR valve so it opens and closes at the right time. The EVR solenoid is controlled by the PCM.

arturogof, you should try www.fordpartsnetwork.com for Ford parts. I just ordered a DPFE sensor from them for $55 + shipping. They are usually much cheaper then the Ford dealer and if the dealer has to order the part too, the wait isn't usually much longer. It might be worth a try.

I think that the "Black Plastic Thing" might also be called the EGR Vacuum Regulator (EVR). The purpose of the EVR is to regulate the amount of vacuum applied to the EGR valve which in turn controls the amount that the EGR opens.

Thanks a lot guys, I will be picking up my new sensor tomorrow morning. I am very excited about getting rid of the Check Engine light at last!!!!!

I knew there was better name than "black plastic thing" for that piece. :D I changed all three when trying to fix mine hoping that it wouldn't be the most expensive part. I ended up spending double what I would have had to, but it was a good learning experience and I know that my EGR system is good for another 5 or 6 years hopefully.

Update

I replaced my DPFE sensor last night. Would have taken about 2 minutes, but I dropped the screw and it took me a half hour to find it. Anyway, I am happy to say that my check engine light is gone!!! So strange to drive down the road and not have that orange light glaring back at you...what a relief. I just wish I didn't waist my money on the EGR valve.

Thanks for all the advice guys.
:D

I just changed my DPFE sensor as well and my battery is disconnected right now to reset the computer. I hope that makes my CEL go away. I'll see for sure in the morning.

I dosconnected my battery, I will wait until tomorow to install the sensor since my engine is still very hot and there is no light to work with. But seems like we will see how it worked tomorrow.

Good night guys, :bounce:

Just an fyi... I did not need to disconnected my battery after installing my sensor. I could be wrong depending on your model/year explorers but it should reset itself upon startup. On my explorer, disconnecting the battery only "clears" the codes from the memory. But with that being said, you may want to "clear" the memory anyway.;)

Well, I made it through the day without a CEL after changing the DFPE sensor. It runs just fine now. Thanks to the board and my Ford Service Manual, I didn't have to throw many parts at it to fix the problem. Thanks!

At last!!!!!!!!!!!! The CEL was off all day long!!!!!!!!
Thanks to Dave and you all guys!!!!!!
This is the greatest website!!!!!

What do y'all think? I had the problem with the vacuum modulator valve on my trans, which was spitting trans fluid up into the vacuum system. I'm still getting the CEL and when i ran the codes, got 332-- Insufficent EGR flow detected. Could trand fluid be somewhat cloggin this up, or does it sound like the sensor is shot? Most people seem to have sensor problems...

You may be able to test the sensor if you have a hand vacuum pump to apply vacuum to the ports and read the voltage that you get. I haven't done this, but I can try to look for the test later when I get home.

If you're sure that the other pieces aren't limiting the flow, then you might be able to try running some sort of cleaner through it, but I don't know how sensitive the sensor would be to solvents though.

I tried running brake cleaner through mine, but it didn't do anything. I think the sensor was dead a long time before that.

Like I said, if you know the other two components of the EGR system aren't bad (EGR Valve & EGR Vacuum Regulator) then try it. Also check the rubber hoses that run up from the EGR tube to the DPFE sensor. Those could have a clog in it or just be bad from age, mine were all cracked and brittle.

Good Luck..

Dave

rfr2212 - I scanned the page that describes how to test the DPFE sensor. If you email me, I can send you a PDF copy of the page.

Edit: I posted this page and some others related to the EGR system in this thread:
